Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Ambush

By eight o’clock the following morning, the news of Isabella Romano’s arrest had exploded across every major financial and tabloid outlet in the country. Headlines screamed across digital billboards in Times Square: *ROMANO HEIRESS ARRESTED AT MORETTI ENGAGEMENT GALA! BILLIONAIRE CALLS OFF THE WEDDING OF THE CENTURY!*
Inside the towering glass skyscraper of Moretti Global Headquarters in Midtown Manhattan, the atmosphere was a pressure cooker on the verge of detonating.
The thirty-fourth floor executive boardroom was packed with twenty-four of the company’s most powerful board members, institutional investors, and legal representatives. At the head of the long obsidian conference table sat Salvatore Romano, his face grim, his eyes bloodshot, radiating pure, murderous venom. He had spent the night bailing Isabella out of central booking, and his political strings were strained to their absolute breaking point.
“Where the hell is he?!” Salvatore slammed his heavy palm onto the table, making the crystal water glasses ring. “Moretti called an emergency shareholder meeting for 8:30 AM. It’s 8:32! If he thinks he can destroy my family’s reputation and walk away with our shipping contracts, he’s out of his mind!”
Marcus Vance, the chief legal counsel for Moretti Global, adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses nervously. “Mr. Romano, Mr. Moretti instructed us to wait. He stated that he would be arriving with the new principal partner.”
“Partner?” Salvatore sneered, looking around at the gathered billionaires and hedge fund managers. “What partner? I own thirty percent of the voting shares in this conglomerate! Nobody enters this partnership without my signature!”
Right on cue, the heavy double frosted-glass doors of the boardroom swung open with an authoritative click.
Every head in the room turned.
Dante Moretti strode in, looking devastatingly sharp in a bespoke three-piece charcoal Savile Row suit. His hair was slicked back, his expression carved from stone, his aura commanding absolute, unquestioned authority.
But it wasn't Dante who drew the collective gasp from the twenty-four men and women around the table.
Walking beside him, her hand tucked securely into the crook of his elbow, was Elena Rossi.
She was unrecognizable from the trembling maid who had carried a silver tray twelve hours earlier. She wore a tailored ivory Alexander McQueen pantsuit that accentuated her regal posture and elegant frame. Her long dark hair was styled into loose, glossy waves cascading over her shoulders. Around her neck was not Isabella’s cheap, stolen diamonds, but a simple, exquisite sapphire pendant—the very pendant Dante had given her when they were eighteen years old on the docks of Genoa.
She walked with her chin held high, her slate-grey eyes calm, piercing, and completely devoid of fear.
Salvatore Romano shot up from his leather executive chair so fast it tipped over and crashed onto the carpet. His face turned an alarming shade of mottled crimson.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Salvatore bellowed, pointing a shaking finger at Elena. “You bring your housemaid to an executive board meeting, Dante? Have you completely lost your senses? Security! Escort this girl out of the building immediately!”
None of the security guards stationed at the doors moved an inch. They stood at rigid attention, their eyes fixed forward, loyal only to Dante.
Dante pulled out the grand leather executive chair at the very head of the table—the chairman’s seat—and gently guided Elena into it. She sat down smoothly, resting her hands on the polished obsidian surface. Dante remained standing beside her, resting one hand possessively on the back of her chair.
“Take your seat, Salvatore,” Dante said, his voice quiet, calm, and terrifyingly resonant. “Or I will have security throw you out of the window. You are looking at the majority owner of Moretti Global.”
A chorus of shocked murmurs erupted around the table. Several board members leaned forward, frantically whispering to their associates.
“That’s impossible!” Salvatore spat, his chest heaving with rage. “This is a public conglomerate! The Romano syndicate holds the second-largest block of voting shares after you, Dante! She is a nobody! A penniless orphan!”
“Her name is Elena Rossi,” Dante announced, his voice slicing through the boardroom chatter like a scalpel. “Daughter of Marco Rossi, the founder of Rossi Maritime. In 2018, before his untimely 'accident,' Marco Rossi established the Alpha Trust in Zurich, which provided the primary venture capital that founded Moretti Global.”
Dante signaled to Marcus Vance. The lawyer immediately began distributing thick, leather-bound legal folios to every board member at the table.
“Under clause twelve of the founding charter,” Dante continued, locking eyes with the horrified Salvatore, “if Marco Rossi’s direct descendant is proven alive and legally verified through DNA sequencing, fifty-one percent of all class-A voting shares automatically revert to that heir. We completed the genetic verification at Mount Sinai Hospital at 4:00 AM this morning. The results are certified by the State of New York.”
Salvatore violently flipped open the folio in front of him. His eyes scanned the legal documents, the Swiss bank seals, and the incontrovertible genetic match confirmation. His hands began to shake violently.
“No...” Salvatore muttered, his voice cracking. “No, this was liquidated... my lawyers ensured...”
“Your lawyers took bribes from you to bury the documents, Salvatore,” Elena spoke up for the first time. Her voice was clear, melodic, and cut through the room with breathtaking poise.
Every eye turned to her.
“You thought that by killing my parents on their yacht, you could erase our family and absorb our Mediterranean routes,” Elena continued, looking directly into the eyes of the man who had ordered the murder of her mother and father. “You thought that by hunting me through Europe, you could extinguish the Rossi name. But I am still here. And as majority shareholder of this company, my first official act is to call for an immediate vote of no confidence against Salvatore Romano and the Romano Logistics Group.”
“I second the motion,” Dante said immediately, a cold smirk touching his lips.
“All in favor?” Dante asked, looking around the table.
The other twenty-two board members were not stupid. They were sharks who smelled blood in the water, and they knew Dante and Elena held the absolute winning hand. One by one, every single hand around the table was raised into the air.
Salvatore stood frozen, isolated, stripped of power in the very room where he had intended to crown himself king.
“You’re out, Salvatore,” Dante whispered across the table. “Your contracts are canceled. Your shares are frozen pending an investigation into corporate fraud and securities manipulation. You have ten minutes to clear your personal belongings from the building before the federal marshals arrive.”
Salvatore looked around the room, realizing that his empire was crumbling around him in real time. The arrogant, untouchable mob boss looked smaller, withered, and cornered.
Slowly, Salvatore reached into his coat pocket.

“If I go down,” Salvatore rasped, his voice dripping with psychotic desperation, “none of you are leaving this room alive.”
