Chapter 5 - The Frame Job

The air in the glass conservatory turned arctic.
Dante stood up slowly, stepping between Elena and the newcomers, his posture transitioning instantly from intimate vulnerability back to predatory dominance. His dark eyes flicked over the two officers, then locked onto Isabella with a cold, murderous detachment.
“You have three seconds to walk back through those doors, Isabella,” Dante said, his voice flat, dangerously quiet. “Before I have my security throw you and your badges off the cliff.”
The older of the two officers, a weathered sergeant with graying temples, swallowed hard and held up a placating hand. “Mr. Moretti, please. We received an emergency 911 dispatch regarding an ongoing grand larceny on your estate. Miss Romano reported that a family heirloom—a three-million-dollar Cartier diamond choker—was stolen from her private guest suite less than twenty minutes ago.”
“She’s lying,” Elena said, rising to her feet, her voice trembling despite her best efforts. “I haven't been anywhere near the guest suites! I have been working in the main ballroom and the lower pantry all evening!”
Isabella let out a high-pitched, theatrical laugh. “Oh, really? Then why did one of the kitchen staff see you sneaking into the upstairs west wing right before the toast? You’re a thief, darling. A desperate, pathetic little maid who thought she could pocket a fortune and run away before the party ended.”
“Isabella,” Dante said, taking a step toward her. The raw menace radiating from him caused both police officers to reflexively unsnap the safety straps on their holsters. “Do not play this game with me. You know damn well she didn't touch your necklace.”
“Then you won’t mind if the officers check her locker in the staff quarters, will you?” Isabella challenged, crossing her arms over her chest, a triumphant, venomous gleam in her eyes. “Or better yet, why don't they search the apron she’s wearing right now?”
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. A sudden, terrible realization dawned on her.
Earlier, when Isabella had grabbed her wrist in the ballroom and shoved her against the champagne table, Isabella’s other hand had brushed heavily against the front of Elena’s uniform apron. At the time, Elena had thought it was merely an aggressive shove to throw her off balance.
*The pocket.*
Trembling, Elena reached her hand down into the deep front pocket of her black servant apron. Her fingertips brushed against something cold, hard, and unmistakably heavy.
Elena gasped, pulling her hand back as if she had been burned by hot coals.
Isabella saw the reaction and grinned like a hyena. “Look at her face! She knows she’s caught! Officers, arrest her!”
The younger officer stepped forward, reaching for the handcuffs at his belt. “Miss, keep your hands where we can see them. Slowly step forward.”
“Don’t touch her,” Dante growled, blocking the officer’s path completely. He stood a full head taller than the patrolman, his broad shoulders completely screening Elena from view. “If you put a single hand on that woman, I will have your badges, your pensions, and the precinct building itself demolished by noon tomorrow.”
“Mr. Moretti, with all due respect, you are interfering with a felony investigation,” the sergeant insisted, though his voice lacked conviction. He knew the sheer political weight of the Moretti name. “If Miss Romano’s property is on her person, we have probable cause.”
“It’s a plant!” Elena cried, tears of pure frustration and outrage blurring her vision. She stepped out from behind Dante, refusing to let him take the fall for a crime she was being framed for. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the heavy, sparkling diamond choker, and held it out in the open air. “She put this in my pocket when she attacked me in the ballroom! She shoved me against the table to frame me!”
The diamonds caught the light of the conservatory, casting brilliant white fractures across the ceiling.
“Oh, please!” Isabella scoffed, turning to the officers. “Do you hear how ridiculous that sounds? I gave away my own three-million-dollar necklace just to frame a servant? She stole it, she got caught, and now she’s inventing fairy tales. Cuff her!”
The younger officer moved forward again, his cuffs clicking open.
Dante didn't back down. In fact, his face settled into a terrifying calm—the cold, calculated stillness of a grandmaster who had already seen twenty moves ahead.
“You want to arrest someone for theft tonight, Sergeant?” Dante asked, his voice smooth as silk.
The officer paused, looking confused. “Sir?”
Dante reached into the breast pocket of his tuxedo, pulled out his bespoke titanium smartphone, and tapped the screen twice. A second later, the massive eighty-inch display screen mounted on the conservatory wall flickered to life.
A high-definition security video feed appeared on the screen. The timestamp in the corner read *10:14 PM*—less than forty-five minutes ago.
The footage showed the main ballroom from a discreet, overhead camera angle. In crisp 4K resolution, Isabella could be seen standing by the champagne fountain, slipping a glittering diamond necklace from her designer clutch and concealing it within the folds of a silk napkin. The video then clearly showed her approaching Elena, grabbing her wrist, and, during the scuffle, deliberately shoving the necklace into the front pouch of Elena’s apron before shoving her backward.
Isabella’s smug smile vanished instantly. The color drained from her face, leaving her as pale as chalk.
“W-What is that?” Isabella stammered, backing toward the conservatory door. “That’s... that’s edited! That’s an AI deepfake!”
“The Moretti estate is equipped with three hundred military-grade surveillance cameras with encrypted blockchain timestamps, Isabella,” Dante said coldly, walking slowly toward her. “Every square inch of this property is recorded, cataloged, and streamed directly to a secure cloud server off-site. You didn't just plant evidence on an innocent woman. You committed grand larceny fraud, filed a false police report, and attempted to frame the majority shareholder of the Moretti Group.”
The two police officers turned to look at Isabella, their expressions instantly hardening from professional deference to severe skepticism.
“Sergeant,” Dante commanded, not even looking at the officers. “Arrest Miss Romano for filing a false felony report and criminal conspiracy. If you don't take her out of my sight in handcuffs right now, my legal team will file a federal lawsuit against your precinct before your shift ends.”
“Now wait just a minute!” Isabella shrieked, backing into the hallway. “You can’t arrest me! My father is Salvatore Romano! Do you know who my father is?!”
“We know who he is, ma'am,” the sergeant said grimly, unholstering his cuffs and stepping toward her. “Please turn around and place your hands behind your back.”
“Dante! You bastard! You ruinous bastard!” Isabella screamed as the cold steel clicked around her wrists. Her designer gown was wrinkled as the officers firmly escorted her down the corridor, her frantic, hysterical curses echoing against the marble walls until the elevator doors closed.
The conservatory fell quiet once more, save for the steady drumming of the rain against the glass roof.
Elena stood frozen, still holding the three-million-dollar necklace in her trembling hand. She looked down at the glittering stones, then up at Dante, who was watching her with an unreadable, intense gaze.
“You called me something back there,” Elena whispered, her voice barely carrying over the sound of the rain. “You told them I was the majority shareholder of the Moretti Group. Why did you say that?”
Dante walked over to her. He gently took the diamond necklace from her fingers and tossed it carelessly onto the table as if it were a piece of worthless junk.
“Because it wasn't a lie, Elena,” Dante said softly. “When your father gave me my first job on the docks, he made me sign a private trust agreement. If anything ever happened to him... and if you ever survived... half of everything I built with his seed money belonged to you.”
Elena gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. “Dante... no.”
May you like
“Yes,” he insisted, stepping closer, his dark eyes burning with absolute certainty. “You are not a maid, Elena. You never were. You are the rightful queen of this empire. And tomorrow morning, the entire world is going to find out.”
