Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

Richard raised the gun, aiming it directly at Elena’s chest as he stepped forward, his eyes wild with sadistic glee. “This is for ruining my life, Elena.”
Elena didn’t scream. She didn’t beg.
Instead, she reached into the pocket of her trench coat, pulled out a small tactical transmitter, and clicked the central button.
*Click.*
Before Richard could pull the trigger, the entire reinforced glass facade of the clinic exploded inward in a deafening shower of crystalline shards and twisted metal.
A thunderous sonic boom shattered the air as flashbang grenades rolled into the lobby, detonating in blinding white light and concussive sound.
*BANG! BANG!*
The fake doctor screamed, clutching his bleeding ears, dropping to his knees. Richard shrieked in terror, blinded by the flash, stumbling backward and firing his weapon wildly into the ceiling, raining plaster and fluorescent bulbs down onto the floor.
Through the smoking breach in the wall, six heavily armed operators in black tactical gear and Kevlar vests stormed the clinic with ruthless, terrifying precision.
“DROP THE WEAPON! DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!”
Before Richard could re-aim, a single, suppressed gunshot cracked through the lobby.
*Thwip.*
A high-caliber round slammed through Richard’s right hand, shattering the bones in his wrist. The gun flew from his grip, clattering across the bloody floor. Richard fell to his knees, clutching his mangled arm, howling in agony as two tactical operators tackled him to the ground, driving their knees into his spine and twisting his arms behind his back in zip-ties.
Julian Moretti dropped the syringe, backing frantically toward the rear fire exit, his face drained of all color.
He slammed his shoulder against the exit door, but it was barred from the outside.
He spun around, his chest heaving, looking for another escape.
Stepping through the smoking, shattered entrance of the clinic was Dante Moretti.
Dante wasn’t wearing a suit. He wore a black tactical sweater, black cargo trousers, and combat boots. In his right hand, he held a customized Sig Sauer pistol, its barrel smoking faintly.
His eyes were completely black, stripped of all humanity. He looked like an archangel of death, moving with terrifying, silent grace through the debris.
“Dante…” Julian gasped, sliding down against the fire door, holding his hands up in surrender. “Dante, listen to me! It was Richard! Richard planned the whole thing! He threatened to expose our offshore tax structures if I didn't help him!”
Dante didn’t say a word.
He walked past the groaning, bleeding Richard Vance without even looking at him. He moved directly to Elena.
With one fluid motion, Dante swept Elena behind his massive frame, checking her with a swift, assessing touch.
“Are you hurt?” he whispered, his voice deep, gravelly, and tight with suppressed terror.
“I’m fine,” Elena gasped, burying her face against the Kevlar covering his ribs. “Dante, our baby… we’re both fine.”
Relief flashed across Dante’s face for half a second before vanishing, replaced once more by pure, unadulterated slaughter.
Dante turned toward his half-brother.
“You touched my family, Julian,” Dante said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, echoing through the wrecked clinic. “You tried to murder my son before he took his first breath.”
“We’re brothers!” Julian screamed, tears of sheer panic streaming down his face as Dante closed the distance between them. “We share the same blood! You can’t kill me! The board—the family trust—!”
Dante stopped three inches from Julian. He raised the pistol, pressing the cold steel of the barrel directly between Julian’s eyes.
“You ceased being my brother the moment you signed your name to that contract in Monaco,” Dante said.

The hammer clicked back.
