Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

The morning sun spilled across the master bedroom of the Moretti penthouse, casting golden light over the twenty-foot floor-to-ceiling windows. Elena woke up slowly, sinking into Egyptian cotton sheets that felt like clouds against her skin. For the first time in six months, she hadn't woken up to the sound of sirens outside a drafty window or the dull ache of sleeping on a lumpy mattress.

She turned over and found Dante sitting in an armchair across the room, already dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, watching her in silence. On the table beside him sat a silver tray laden with fresh berries, steaming oatmeal, freshly squeezed orange juice, and a single pink rose.

“You’re staring,” she said softly, pulling the duvet up to her collarbone.

“I spent six months in the dark thinking you were dead or lost to me forever,” Dante answered, his voice thick with unyielding devotion. “I intend to spend the rest of my life staring at you.”

Elena looked down at her hands. The contrast between her reality yesterday and her reality today was jarring. Yesterday, she was counting pennies to buy bread. Today, she was wrapped in luxury that could finance a small nation.

“Dante, we need to talk about the future,” she said quietly. “You can’t just buy my life back. Richard… Richard’s family has power. The media is turning this into a spectacle. I don’t want my baby dragged through a circus of scandals and court battles.”

Dante stood up, walking deliberately toward the bed. He sat on the edge, the mattress dipping beneath his weight. He took her small, cold hands into his large, warm ones.

“Richard Vance has nothing,” Dante said with absolute finality. “This morning at 6:00 AM, my legal team filed twenty-four separate counts of financial fraud, domestic harassment, and breach of fiduciary duty against him and his father. By noon, their assets will be frozen. By the end of the week, Richard Vance won’t have enough money to buy coffee, let alone hire a lawyer.”

Elena’s eyes widened. “Dante, you’re destroying them.”

“They tried to destroy you,” he snarled, a glimpse of the terrifying predator resurfacing behind his eyes. “They threw you into the street while you were carrying my blood. If anything, I am being merciful by using the courts instead of having them buried in concrete.”

He reached out, his hand resting tenderly against her stomach. As if sensing his father’s voice, the baby gave a distinct, rhythmic kick.

Dante’s expression instantly melted, a soft, awe-filled smile touching his lips. “He knows me.”

“He’s been very active today,” Elena admitted, a faint smile gracing her face for the first time in months. “The doctor said the protein smoothies your chef made are helping.”

“He will have the best of everything,” Dante swore, his thumb gently stroking her knuckles. “And so will you. Tomorrow night is the annual St. Jude Children’s Hospital Gala at the Metropolitan Museum. The entire city’s elite will be there. The mayor, the senators, the old money, the Vances.”

Elena froze, pulling her hand back. “No. Dante, no. I can’t go to a high-society gala looking like this. I don’t belong in that world anymore. They’ll sneer at me. They’ll say I’m a gold-digger who hopped from one rich man to another.”

Dante leaned in, his lips brushing the shell of her ear, his breath warm and intoxicating. “Let them whisper. Tomorrow night, Elena, I am announcing our engagement. I am showing the entire world that you are the sole queen of the Moretti empire. And if any man or woman dares look at you with anything less than absolute reverence, I will buy their lives and ruin them before midnight.”

Elena looked into his dark, fierce eyes. There was no hesitation in him. No doubt. He loved her with a ferocity that bordered on terrifying, yet within that possessive fire, she found the first real safety she had known in years.

“You’re insane, Dante Moretti,” she murmured.

May you like

“Only for you,” he replied, sealing his promise with a slow, lingering kiss that left her breathless.
