Chapter 7 - The Private Clinic

The following morning at 9:45 AM, a sleek black SUV pulled up outside the private maternal health center on 74th Street. The street was quiet, shielded by the leafy canopy of late autumn trees in the Upper East Side.
Elena stepped out of the vehicle, wearing an oversized beige trench coat and dark sunglasses, her head lowered as she walked briskly toward the glass doors of the clinic. Behind her, two undercover bodyguards dressed in plain civilian clothes followed at a discreet five-pace distance.
Inside, the clinic was eerily deserted. The reception desk was empty; the usual soft classical music was turned off. The hum of the industrial air conditioning was the only sound echoing through the sterile white corridors.
Elena’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. She kept one hand pressed firmly against her stomach, whispering silent prayers to the tiny life kicking gently beneath her palm. *Be brave, little one. Your father is near.*
“Mrs. Moretti?”
A man in a surgical mask and blue scrubs stepped out of Exam Room 3. His eyes were cold, darting nervously toward the clinic’s front glass doors.
“Yes,” Elena said, her voice shaking with authentic fear. “I had an emergency appointment scheduled with Dr. Harris.”
“Dr. Harris was called into emergency surgery,” the man lied smoothly, motioning toward the darkened hallway leading to the private ultrasound suites. “I am Dr. Mercer. Please, step back here. We need to check your fetal monitoring immediately.”
Elena hesitated, taking a step backward. “I think I’ll wait in the lobby until Dr. Harris returns.”
Before she could turn, the heavy rear fire exit banged open.
Richard Vance stepped out from the shadows, his clothes wrinkled, his hair disheveled, smelling of stale liquor and desperation. In his trembling right hand, he held a black semi-automatic pistol.
“You’re not going anywhere, Elena,” Richard rasped, his voice wild and unhinged.
Elena backed up against the reception counter, her breath catching in her throat. “Richard… put the gun down. Look at yourself. You’ve lost your mind.”
“I’ve lost everything!” Richard screamed, his spit flying across the sterile tiles. “My father is in the ICU with a massive stroke! The feds are raiding our offices right now! Our accounts are seized! All because of you! Because you couldn't just crawl into a ditch and die like you were supposed to!”
The fake doctor locked the front glass entrance, pulling down the heavy metal security grate, trapping them inside.
From the shadows of the rear hallway, a third figure emerged, clapping slowly.
Julian Moretti walked out, holding a small silver briefcase. He looked completely composed, utterly detached from the chaos around him.
“Remarkable courage, Elena,” Julian sneered, tilting his head. “To think my brother brought down half the financial sector of this city for a common art student. But then again, Dante always was a romantic fool.”
“Julian,” Elena said, forcing her voice to remain steady. “Dante knows. He knows you worked with Arthur Vance. He knows about Monaco.”
Julian chuckled softly. “Dante knows many things. But Dante is currently sixty blocks away at a decoy emergency board meeting we staged through his logistics division. By the time he realizes this appointment was compromised, it will be over.”
Julian opened the silver briefcase, revealing a pre-loaded syringe filled with a clear, viscous liquid.
“A simple potassium chloride overdose,” Julian explained calmly. “It will cause sudden cardiac arrest. The coroner will rule it a tragic complication of late-stage preeclampsia caused by severe maternal trauma. You die, the bastard dies, and Dante spends the next decade rotting in grief while I take control of the Moretti board.”

Julian turned to Richard, gesturing toward Elena with a cold flick of his wrist. “Hold her down, Richard. Let’s end this.”
