Chapter 5 - The Empress Returns

The grand entrance of the Metropolitan Museum of Art was flanked by towering marble pillars draped in black velvet and sparkling fairy lights. Red carpets cascaded down the sweeping stairs, where hundreds of paparazzi lenses flashed like lightning against the night sky. Limousines and Rolls-Royces lined Fifth Avenue, discharging the city’s most influential titans, socialites, and politicians.
Inside the grand hall, Richard Vance stood near the champagne fountain, sweating profusely despite the cool autumn air. His father, Arthur, stood beside him, clutching a glass of scotch, his skin pale and sunken. Throughout the room, old colleagues and business partners turned their backs when the Vances approached. The viral video had done catastrophic damage; rumors of their frozen assets were already circulating like wildfire.
“We shouldn’t be here, Dad,” Richard hissed under his breath, his eyes darting frantically across the crowd. “People are looking at us like we have the plague.”
“We have to be here!” Arthur hissed back through clenched teeth. “If we hide, the banks will know we’re finished! We have to project strength! Julian assured us he would handle Dante tonight.”
Suddenly, the collective chatter of five hundred elite guests ceased.
The brass heralds at the top of the grand marble staircase went silent. The photographers at the interior velvet ropes began snapping pictures at a deafening, frantic pace.
A collective gasp swept through the ballroom.
Standing at the apex of the grand staircase was Dante Moretti. He looked lethal and magnificent in a midnight-blue custom tuxedo with silk lapels, his broad shoulders cutting an imposing silhouette against the museum’s marble architecture.
But no one was looking at Dante.
All eyes were fixed on the woman on his arm.
Elena was breathtaking. She wore an emerald-green silk empire gown designed exclusively by Valentino, draping elegantly over her six-month pregnant belly like liquid jewel. The rich fabric contrasted brilliantly with her porcelain skin. Her dark hair was styled into an intricate, cascading updo secured with vintage diamond pins. Around her neck rested the infamous *Tears of Venice*—a fifty-carat emerald and diamond necklace from the Moretti family vault that hadn't seen the light of day in over forty years.
She wasn't hiding her pregnancy. She carried herself with the poise of an empress, her head held high, glowing with an ethereal, undeniable beauty.
“Look at her,” someone whispered in the crowd. “Is that… Richard Vance’s ex-wife?”
“She looks like royalty. My god, she’s wearing the Moretti heirlooms!”
“Richard threw that away? Is he completely mad?”
Richard stared up at Elena, his drink slipping from his fingers and shattering against the marble floor. Red wine splattered across his polished shoes, but he didn't even notice. The woman he had screamed at in a grocery store, the woman he had tried to reduce to begging on the floor, was standing at the right hand of the most dangerous man in North America, wearing jewelry worth more than his entire family company.
Dante guided Elena slowly down the staircase, his hand resting securely against the small of her back, supporting her every step. When they reached the ballroom floor, the crowd parted instantly, creating a wide, reverent path.
The Mayor of New York stepped forward, his hand outstretched with a wide, obsequious grin. “Dante! A stunning evening. And you must introduce us to this exquisite vision.”
Dante shook the mayor’s hand firmly, but his eyes swept across the room until they locked directly onto Richard and Arthur Vance.
“Mr. Mayor, distinguished guests,” Dante’s deep voice carried effortlessly through the quieted hall, amplified by the natural acoustics of the cavernous room. “Allow me to introduce Elena Vance. Soon to be Elena Moretti. And the mother of my future heir.”
A murmur of shock and applause rippled through the gathered billionaires and diplomats.
Dante turned slightly, looking straight at Richard. “I have heard rumors circulating over the last few days that Elena was abandoned. That she was penniless. That she was carrying a child without a father.” Dante’s smile was thin, razor-sharp, and devoid of warmth. “Let me correct the record. Elena is the sole beneficiary of the Moretti Family Foundation. Any offense against her is an act of war against me. And as of 4:00 PM today, Moretti Holdings has acquired the controlling debt of Vance Capital.”
Gasps erupted around the room.
Arthur Vance grabbed his chest, his eyes rolling back as his knees buckled. Several guests rushed to catch the older man as he collapsed to the floor in a full cardiac panic.
Richard fell to his knees beside his father, looking up across the ballroom at Elena.

Elena looked down at him. There was no hatred in her eyes, no cheap gloating. There was only absolute, cool indifference. She turned away from him, slipping her arm around Dante’s waist, completely erasing Richard from her universe.
