Chapter 20 - THE LETTER WITH NO RETURN ADDRESS

Two years after the morning Daniel ordered her from the mansion, Claire woke to sunlight spilling across her bedroom.
Her life had become peaceful.
Not perfect.
Peaceful.
And she had learned the difference.
The company was stable.
Evelyn was part of her life.
Rosa had finally learned how to enjoy retirement.
Daniel remained somewhere in Claire's past.
A painful chapter.
Not the whole story.
That morning, Claire walked outside and found an envelope beneath her front door.
No stamp.
No return address.
Only her name.
CLAIRE BENNETT.
She opened it.
Inside was an old photograph.
Richard Mercer stood beside Thomas Bennett.
Between them was a third man Claire had never seen.
On the back were seven handwritten words.
Richard Mercer was not your biological father.
Claire stopped breathing.
There was another piece of paper.
A recent photograph.
It showed the same mysterious man, now elderly, stepping from a black car.
Someone had circled his face.
Beneath it was a message.
Your mother was told a lie too.
Claire looked toward the ocean.
Evelyn was walking up the path carrying two cups of coffee.
She saw Claire's expression and stopped.
“What happened?”
Claire slowly raised the photograph.
“Mom…”
Evelyn approached.
Then she saw the man's face.
The coffee slipped from her hand.
One cup shattered against the stone.
Claire stared at her mother.
Evelyn had gone completely pale.
“You know him.”
It wasn't a question.
Evelyn couldn't answer.
Claire turned the final photograph over.
There was one last sentence written on the back.
HE KNOWS CLAIRE IS ALIVE.
A car appeared at the far end of the coastal road.
Black.
Slow.
Coming directly toward the house.
Claire looked at her mother.
Evelyn whispered a name Claire had never heard before.
Then the car stopped outside the gate.
The rear door opened.
An elderly man stepped onto the road.
He looked toward Claire.
And smiled.
For thirty-eight years, Claire had believed she was searching for the truth about her past.
She suddenly understood something far more frightening.
The past had been searching for her.
And this time—
May you like
Claire didn't run.
THE END… FOR NOW.
