Chapter 1 - TAKE YOUR SUITCASE AND LEAVE

“Take your suitcase and leave.”

Those were the first words Claire Bennett heard when she returned home after three months away.

Not hello.

Not I missed you.

Not even an explanation.

Just six words delivered with the casual cruelty of a man dismissing someone who had arrived at the wrong address.

Claire stood beneath the morning sun with one hand wrapped around the silver handle of her suitcase.

For several seconds, she couldn't move.

The mansion behind Daniel Mercer looked exactly as she remembered it.

The limestone walls glowed beneath the California sun.

White hydrangeas crowded the terrace.

Beyond the glass doors, the crystal chandelier Claire had personally chosen three years earlier burned warmly over the foyer.

Everything was familiar.

Except the woman standing behind her husband.

Vanessa Cole.

Blonde.

Beautiful.

Bare-legged.

Wearing a pale pink satin robe.

Claire recognized that robe.

She had bought it in Paris.

For herself.

Her stomach tightened.

Daniel stood between the two women in a navy silk robe, holding a glass of whiskey despite the early hour.

He looked remarkably calm.

That hurt more than anger would have.

Claire had spent ninety-two days caring for her dying father in Boston.

Daniel had called less and less during those final weeks.

Business problems, he'd said.

Meetings.

Investors.

Stress.

Claire had believed him because eleven years of marriage had taught her that trust was supposed to survive distance.

Apparently, ninety-two days had been enough to destroy eleven years.

Claire looked at Vanessa.

Then at Daniel.

“In my own house?”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Don't make this harder than it needs to be.”

Claire almost laughed.

Harder?

Her father had died twelve days ago.

She had buried him beneath freezing rain.

She had spent the previous night flying across the country, imagining that when she reached home, Daniel would finally hold her.

Instead, another woman was wearing her robe.

Claire's fingers tightened around the suitcase handle.

“How long?”

Vanessa shifted behind Daniel.

Daniel didn't answer.

“How long, Daniel?”

“Claire.”

“Say it.”

A cleaning brush scraped against stone nearby.

Claire turned.

An elderly housekeeper was kneeling on the wet patio beside a gray bucket.

Her name was Rosa Alvarez.

Rosa had worked for the Mercer family for almost twenty-five years.

She had been there before Claire married Daniel.

She had decorated the nursery when Claire became pregnant.

And she had held Claire's hand in the hospital after Claire lost the baby.

Rosa wasn't looking at Daniel.

She was staring at Claire.

Not with embarrassment.

Not with pity.

With terror.

Claire felt something cold move through her chest.

“Rosa?”

The older woman dropped her gaze.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Your driver can take you wherever you want.”

Claire stared at him.

“You knew I was coming home today.”

“Yes.”

“And you let her stand there wearing my clothes?”

Vanessa finally spoke.

“Claire, this isn't what you think.”

Claire looked at her.

Vanessa immediately regretted speaking.

“Then please,” Claire said quietly, “tell me what I should think.”

Silence.

Rosa's hand began trembling.

Then the older woman whispered something.

Barely loud enough to hear.

“Oh God.”

Daniel turned.

Rosa stared at Claire.

“She doesn't know.”

Everything changed.

Daniel's relaxed expression vanished.

Vanessa's face went pale.

Claire slowly released the suitcase handle.

“What don't I know?”

Daniel's voice became dangerously quiet.

“Rosa.”

The housekeeper looked at him.

“Don't.”

One word.

But Claire heard the warning inside it.

She stepped away from her suitcase.

“Don't tell me what?”

Rosa's eyes filled with fear.

“Mrs. Mercer…”

“Tell me.”

Daniel moved toward her.

“Claire, get in the car.”

“No.”

“Now.”

“No.”

For the first time in eleven years, Claire saw something in her husband's eyes she had never noticed before.

Fear.

Not fear of losing her.

Fear of what she might discover.

Claire turned back toward Rosa.

“What is everyone hiding from me?”

Rosa looked at Daniel.

Then Vanessa.

Then the mansion.

Finally, she looked directly into Claire's eyes.

“You're not his—”

“ROSA.”

Daniel's glass struck the marble table hard enough to crack.

Everyone froze.

A thin line of whiskey spilled across the white stone.

Rosa stopped speaking.

But it was already too late.

Claire had heard enough to know one thing.

Whatever was happening inside her home was bigger than an affair.

May you like

Much bigger.

And Daniel Mercer was terrified she was about to discover why.
