Chapter 8 - The Birth of an Heir

The Grand Apex Boardroom, the historic shrine of cold capitalism and brutal corporate warfare, was transformed within minutes into a sterile emergency delivery theater.

The mahogany table was cleared of balance sheets, water carafes, and the remnants of Grant’s destroyed life. Outside in the hallway, three dozen corporate executives stood vigil in stunned, anxious silence, completely ignoring the ringing of their smartphones and the desperate inquiries from Wall Street journalists.

Inside, the harsh fluorescent lights beat down upon Evelyn as she lay across the hastily sanitized leather cushions of the boardroom's central sofa, her head propped up by Arthur Vance’s folded suit jacket.

"Deep breath, Evelyn! Push!" the lead paramedic shouted, his voice calm, firm, and practiced. "On three! One... two... three!"

Evelyn threw her head back, her scream tearing through the double doors and echoing down the five-thousand-square-foot executive wing. She channeled seven years of betrayal, seven years of silencing her own brilliance, seven years of swallowing Grant Vance’s emotional poison into a single, titanic physical effort.

Her vision tunneled into pure white.

She wasn't pushing to survive Grant's malice anymore. She was pushing to bring a new life into a world where no one would ever dare diminish her again.

"Head is clear!" the secondary medic called out. "One more big push, Evelyn! Give me everything you have!"

Evelyn dug her fingernails into the leather cushions. She closed her eyes, saw the face of her grandfather, Harold Sterling, and gave one final, earth-shattering push.

A sharp, wet cry pierced the air.

It was not a weak whimper. It was a loud, defiant, furious wail that reverberated against the glass windows overlooking the city.

The paramedic chuckled, quickly suctioning the newborn’s airways and wrapping her in sterile blue surgical blankets. "It's a girl, Mrs. Vance. A healthy, beautiful, remarkably loud baby girl."

The paramedic gently placed the crying infant onto Evelyn’s bare chest.

The moment the tiny, warm skin touched Evelyn’s heart, the agony, the exhaustion, the lingering terror of the morning’s ambush dissolved into nothingness. Evelyn looked down through tears at the tiny, perfect face of her daughter. The baby had a shock of dark hair, clenched little fists, and deep slate-blue eyes that blinked against the light.

"You're safe," Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling with unconditional love. She kissed the baby’s damp forehead. "No one is ever going to take you from me. No one."

Arthur Vance stepped softly back into the room, holding a freshly printed copy of the international press release. He looked at the woman and child, and for the first time in twenty years, the cold old lawyer let a tear roll down his cheek.

"How is she?" Arthur asked quietly.

"She's perfect," Evelyn smiled, exhausted but luminous. "What does the board say, Arthur?"

Arthur held up the press release.

"The Vane-Holt delegation arrived ten minutes ago," he said with a wry smile. "When they heard that our new Chairwoman had just ratified a three-billion-dollar international logistics merger while in active labor on the boardroom carpet, their Chief Executive tore up their previous counter-demands. He said anyone with that much steel in her spine is someone they want running the entire Western hemisphere."

Arthur leaned down, gently squeezing Evelyn’s shoulder. "The board voted unanimously thirty seconds ago, Evelyn. Grant Vance has been permanently stripped of all corporate titles, shares, and executive privileges. You are now the undisputed President, CEO, and majority shareholder of Vance-Sterling Global."

Evelyn looked down at her daughter, who had stopped crying and was now resting peacefully against her chest, her tiny fingers curled tightly around Evelyn’s thumb.

"Not Vance-Sterling," Evelyn murmured softly, her eyes flashing with diamond clarity.

May you like

"From this moment forward, Arthur... it is simply the Sterling Conglomerate."
