Chapter 3 - The Crimson Envelope

Water splashed across the mahogany surface as the crystal glasses shattered against the floor, but Arthur Vance didn't flinch. With the practiced calm of an old jurist, he pulled the crimson envelope out of reach before Grant’s manic fingers could touch it.

"Sit down, Grant," Arthur said with absolute ice. "Before I have the guards remove you from your own building."

Grant collapsed back onto the edge of the table, his chest heaving, his immaculate silk tie askew. For the first time in his life, the arrogant prince of high finance was hyperventilating. Cold sweat dripped from his sideburns, soaking his collar.

Vanessa hurried to his side, clutching his bicep. "Grant, darling, look at me. It doesn't matter what she has. We have the child! We have the future heir to the Vance lineage! The board will never choose an abandoned wife over the mother of your son!"

Vanessa thrust her belly forward proudly, glaring down the table at the elderly executives as if dared them to defy nature itself.

Evelyn let out a soft, bitter laugh that cut straight through the tension. "You really want to play the pregnancy card, Vanessa? In front of these forty-seven men? In front of the corporate ethics oversight committee?"

"You're just bitter!" Vanessa snapped, her veneer completely cracking into gutter-level hostility. "You're old, Evelyn! You're swollen and boring, and Grant hasn't touched you in nine months! I gave him what he wanted! I am carrying his real legacy!"

Evelyn ignored her, turning instead to Arthur. "Arthur, please open the crimson envelope. Read section four. Read it aloud so everyone understands the lengths to which my husband was willing to go to clear his path."

Arthur unthreaded the red string and slid out the contents. There were no balance sheets. There were no merger contracts.

Instead, the packet contained certified medical records bearing the seal of St. Jude’s Women’s Pavilion, encrypted transcripts from an offshore WhatsApp burner account, and an ironclad contract draft labeled *NON-CONSENSUAL INVOLUNTARY CONSERVATORSHIP & SURROGATE TRANSFER.*

Arthur Vance read the first three paragraphs in silence. As he continued down the page, his weathered hands began to shake. The color drained from the old man's face, replaced by an expression of profound, sickening disgust.

"Grant..." Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with genuine horror. "What have you done?"

"Uncle Arthur, give me that!" Grant pleaded, his voice breaking into a whimpering squeak. "You don't understand the context! It was just insurance! It was just a legal contingency to protect the company's valuation during the transition!"

"Read it, Arthur," Evelyn commanded, her eyes fixed on Grant’s trembling form. "Read it so these executives know who they've been taking orders from."

Arthur cleared his throat, but his voice was cracked and hollow.

"The document in my hand," Arthur began, his words falling like lead weights upon the room, "is a drafted petition for urgent psychiatric intervention and involuntary post-partum institutionalization, drawn up by Dr. Julian Mercer at the behest of Grant Vance."

Murmurs of confusion rippled across the room.

"It outlines a scheduled medical induction," Arthur continued, "dated for next Tuesday. Grant had arranged for Dr. Mercer to dose Evelyn with high-grade synthetic sedatives during labor, record her subsequent confusion and lethargy as acute post-partum psychosis, and have her committed indefinitely to a private psychiatric facility in the Cayman Islands."

The boardroom turned dead, terrifyingly cold. Several older executives gasped aloud.

"And the baby?" one board member, a gray-haired father of three, whispered from the center of the table. "What was to happen to Evelyn’s baby?"

Arthur looked up, his eyes burning with fury. "The contract stipulates that upon Evelyn’s commitment for psychological incapacitation, parental rights would be transferred wholly to Grant Vance. Concurrently, a second document—already signed in advance by Vanessa Hughes—would legally designate Vanessa as the primary maternal guardian of Evelyn’s newborn daughter."

Arthur tossed the pages onto the table. They slapped the wood with an ugly, wet smack.

"He wasn't just divorcing her," Arthur said, his voice ringing with pure revulsion. "He was planning to steal her child, drug her into insanity, lock her away in a tropical cage, and hand her flesh and blood to his mistress to pose as the happy family for the public press release."
