Chapter 4 - The Poison in the Well

The revelation hit the boardroom like a biological detonation.
Executives who had previously looked down at their fingernails, eager to remain neutral in an executive power struggle, recoiled from Grant as if he were carrying the plague. Two board members on Grant’s immediate left pushed their rolling chairs back, physically distancing themselves from the CEO.
"You monster," whispered Evelyn's former mentor, a seventy-year-old CFO who had served the company for three decades. "You sick, depraved animal."
Vanessa took a step back, her eyes darting between the furious faces of the executives. "It... it wasn't like that! That was Grant's idea! I had nothing to do with the medical paperwork! I was just trying to provide a stable home for the child!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Grant barked, turning on her with wild, manic eyes. "Shut your mouth!"
"Don't you dare scream at me!" Vanessa hissed back, her polished facade completely unraveling. "You told me you had everything handled! You told me she was a spineless, sheltered idiot who would cry, take the five million, and crawl back to her mother! You said she had no idea what we were doing!"
"She didn't!" Grant yelled, grabbing his hair in both hands, his mind snapping under the weight of his collapsing reality. "How did you get those files, Evelyn? Those were stored on an encrypted, air-gapped server in Zurich! Who betrayed me?"
Evelyn reached into her briefcase one more time. She pulled out a small, sleek black smartphone, tapped the screen, and set it on the conference table’s central speaker pod.
A dial tone rang twice. Then, a calm, heavily accented Swiss voice answered.
"Good morning, Mrs. Vance. Has the board meeting commenced?"
Grant’s knees buckled. "Dr... Dr. Mercer?"
"Hello, Grant," the voice from the speaker replied, completely stripped of its previous clinical warmth. "I apologize for the inconvenience. However, when Mrs. Vance’s private intelligence team visited my private clinic in Zurich last Thursday, they brought along several agents from the Swiss Federal Financial Market Supervisory Authority. It turns out that accepting a two-million-dollar bribe to falsify a psychiatric declaration and administer black-market neuroleptics carries a twenty-year sentence in a maximum-security penitentiary."
Grant dropped his head onto the mahogany table with a sickening thud.
"Dr. Mercer was remarkably cooperative once he realized his medical license and his freedom were on the line," Evelyn said smoothly into the microphone. "He provided every encrypted email, every voice note, every wire transfer receipt detailing your little plot. Thank you, Doctor. We will handle the rest."
The line went dead.
Evelyn leaned forward over the table, bracing herself against the wood as a sudden, sharp contraction seized her abdomen. She closed her eyes, breathing through her nose in steady, rhythmic counts until the wave of pain subsided. When she opened her eyes again, they were blazing.
"You thought you were a mastermind, Grant," Evelyn whispered. "You thought because I stayed home, because I took care of the house and nursed you through your panic attacks, that I was stupid. You forgot that before I married you, I graduated top of my class at Wharton. I built the financial predictive models your entire company relies on today. Did you honestly believe I wouldn't notice fifty million dollars leaking from the Sterling trusts into offshore blind accounts?"
Grant slowly lifted his head. His eyes were bloodshot, his face wet with a mixture of tears and frantic sweat. "Evelyn... please. Listen to me. We can fix this. We can talk about this in private. The board doesn't need to be involved in our family tragedy. I was under immense pressure! The merger was killing me! Vanessa... Vanessa seduced me, she poisoned my mind, she told me—"
"You pathetic coward!" Vanessa shrieked. She lunged forward, her acrylic nails aiming for Grant’s face, but one of the security guards stepped between them, pinning her arm behind her back. "You begged me to stay with you! You bought me that ring! You promised me I would be the queen of Vance International!"
"And what a royal reign it would have been," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with venom. "Except for one minor detail, Vanessa."
Evelyn reached into the black briefcase for the very last time.
"What is that?" Vanessa breathed, a new, primal terror suddenly creeping into her expression.
May you like
"This," Evelyn said, sliding a bright yellow envelope across the table, "is your file."
