Chapter 5 - The Phantom Pregnancy

Vanessa froze. Her frantic struggling against the security guard instantly ceased. Her eyes fixed upon the yellow envelope with the terror of a condemned prisoner looking at the gallows.
"Don't..." Vanessa stammered, all the malice vanishing from her voice, replaced by a hollow, breathless panic. "Evelyn, please. Don't do this."
"Do what, Vanessa?" Evelyn asked, tilting her head. "Reveal your truth to your loving fiancé? Surely a woman carrying the 'true heir' of the Vance empire has nothing to hide from the father of her child?"
Grant looked between the two women, his paranoia spiking. "What is she talking about, Vanessa? What’s in that envelope?"
Evelyn didn't wait for Arthur to read it. She picked up the first sheet herself and held it up for the entire room to see. It was a high-resolution sonogram report from the elite Philadelphia Fertility Institute, dated three weeks prior.
"Tell me, Vanessa," Evelyn said, her voice echoing in the dead silence. "How exactly did you manage to get pregnant six months ago, when Grant was recovering from a documented double bilateral varicocele surgery that left him clinically sterile for ninety days?"
The room collectively gasped.
Grant blinked stupidly, his jaw falling open. "What? What did you say?"
"You had the operation in November, Grant," Evelyn said coldly. "Dr. Bradley warned you that conception would be biologically impossible until at least late spring. Yet Vanessa came to you in January, crying tears of joy, claiming she was carrying your miracle baby."
Grant slowly turned his head toward Vanessa. His face was a mask of utter bewilderment. "Vanessa... you told me the doctor said my count was fine... you told me..."
"That’s because it wasn't his count she was worried about," Evelyn interrupted.
She tossed the second page of the file directly onto Grant’s chest. It was an invoice for an offshore private fertility ledger, along with surveillance photographs taken outside a luxury hotel in downtown Manhattan.
The photographs depicted Vanessa wrapped intimately in the arms of a tall, silver-haired man with sharp, predatory features—a man every single executive in that room recognized immediately.
"Marcus Sterling," Arthur Vance gasped, leaning over the table. "My God. Grant’s chief rival."
Marcus Sterling was the estranged black sheep of Evelyn’s distant family, a corporate raider who had spent the last five years attempting hostile takeovers of the Vance supply chain.
"She wasn't your salvation, Grant," Evelyn said, her voice cutting through the man’s soul like a diamond blade. "She was a Trojan horse. Vanessa was Marcus Sterling’s mistress for three years before she ever applied for a job at this company. That child she's carrying isn't your heir. It's Marcus’s."
Grant stood entirely paralyzed. He looked at the photographs of Vanessa kissing his bitterest enemy. He looked at the medical documentation proving the paternity of the child he had traded his entire life, his marriage, and his soul to protect.
"You..." Grant choked out, spinning around to face Vanessa. His voice was no longer that of a billionaire; it was the sound of a wounded, dying animal. "You used me?"
Vanessa sneered, dropping all pretense. The fear evaporated from her face, replaced by a bitter, spiteful sneer. "Used you? You were begging to be used, Grant! You're an insecure, arrogant little boy who lives in your father’s shadow! You were so desperate to believe that a younger, hotter woman worshiped you that you swallowed every single lie I fed you!"
She yanked her arm free from the guard’s grasp, smoothing down her crimson dress with trembling fingers.
"Marcus is going to strip this company down to the copper wiring anyway," Vanessa hissed, glaring at the board. "By the time we're done with you, Grant Vance will be a punchline in every financial rag on the planet!"
"Not quite," Evelyn intervened calmly.
She picked up the boardroom landline phone, pressed the speaker button, and spoke three words that shattered whatever delusions Vanessa had left.
