Chapter 2 - The Stolen Empire

The silence that settled over the Grand Apex Boardroom was thick, suffocating, and absolute.

Grant scrambled up from his chair, frantically brushing his jacket lapels to regain his composure. "You think a collection of fabricated printouts is going to intimidate this board? I am the Vance dynasty. My father built the groundwork for this merger, and I hold fifty-one percent of the voting proxy!"

"Do you?" Evelyn replied coldly.

She didn't waste time looking at him. Instead, she pulled a pristine, royal-blue dossier from the briefcase and slid it directly across the table into the hands of Arthur Vance—Grant’s seventy-two-year-old uncle and the chief legal counsel of Vance International.

Arthur was a stoic relic of corporate old money. He had remained completely passive throughout Grant’s tirade, his expression unreadable behind horn-rimmed bifocals. But as he opened Evelyn’s dossier, his pale eyes widened. He pushed his glasses higher on his nose, skimming the notary stamps, the watermarks, and the verified signatures of the Delaware Chancery Court.

Grant leaned forward, sweating through his custom shirt. "Uncle Arthur, tell the guards to drag her out. We have a foreign delegation arriving in thirty minutes. We cannot let a hormonal, hysterical woman derail three billion dollars!"

Arthur Vance slowly raised his gaze. He didn't look at Grant. He looked at the forty-seven executives who held hundreds of millions of dollars in company equity.

"The merger cannot proceed under Grant’s signature," Arthur announced, his voice dry and crackling with gravity.

Grant slammed his palm on the table. "What the hell are you talking about? I am the CEO!"

"You were the designated executor of the family trust," Arthur corrected, turning a page for the nearby board members to see. "A designation contingent upon the Vance-Sterling Covenant established by your grandfather forty years ago. An agreement that required the CEO to maintain sixty percent unencumbered liquidity in personal holdings to act as guarantor for an international leveraged buyout."

Arthur turned to look squarely at his nephew. "Grant doesn't control this merger. His wife does."

A collective murmur erupted down the length of the sixty-foot table. Executives leaned over each other’s shoulders, murmuring in panicked, hurried tones.

Vanessa stepped forward, her heels clicking aggressively on the hardwood border. "That’s impossible! Arthur, you're senile! Grant bought out the Sterling family trust three months ago. He transferred the capital into our new joint offshore venture! We hold the liquidity!"

Evelyn smiled. It was the first time she had smiled all morning, and it held all the warmth of a falling guillotine.

"Thank you for saving me the trouble of introducing Exhibit B, Vanessa," Evelyn said calmly.

Evelyn withdrew a secondary stack of papers from the briefcase, each page stamped with red forensic audit insignias from the Internal Revenue Service and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.

"Grant didn't buy out the Sterling trust," Evelyn explained, looking directly at the board members. "Because the Sterling trust was never Grant’s to buy. It was created by my maternal grandfather, Harold Sterling, who financed the original foundation of Vance International in 1984. The covenant stipulated that in the event of an attempt to dilute the Sterling lineage, or upon proof of fraudulent liquidation, the voting proxy immediately defaults to Harold Sterling’s sole surviving heir."

Evelyn tapped her knuckles against her chest. "Me."

Grant’s face drained of color until his skin mirrored the ivory of his wife's dress. "You... you knew? You've known for months?"

"I've known since the night you told me you were working late in Zurich," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "While you were actually in Saint-Tropez buying Vanessa a six-million-dollar villa with money you embezzled out of the corporate pension reserve."

"That is a lie!" Vanessa screeched, her voice losing every shred of polished elegance. "Grant, shut her up! Call security!"

"Let the security come," Evelyn replied evenly. "Because the men standing at the door are no longer on your payroll, Grant. The board’s retainers were switched to the Sterling family office at eight o'clock this morning."

The two security guards at the door folded their hands behind their backs, looking straight ahead, completely deaf to Grant’s panicked commands.

Grant stood frozen, looking like a man who had stepped off a skyscraper expecting a safety net, only to realize he had jumped into an abyss. Yet, as terrible as the financial ruin was, it was not the worst thing in the room.

Arthur Vance reached out his weathered hand toward the bottom of the black briefcase, where a thick, crimson-labeled manila envelope lay waiting.

Grant caught the movement out of the corner of his eye. His pupils dilated in sheer, blinding terror.

May you like

"No!" Grant screamed, lunging across the conference table, knocking over two crystal glasses. "Don't open that! Uncle Arthur, don't you dare touch that!"
