Chapter 30 - The Heartbeat Beneath the Snow

Daniel’s smile vanished. He exchanged a sharp, wary glance with his mother.

The radio on the desk was an encrypted, closed-circuit military transceiver—the kind Daniel had brought specifically for his private extraction team. But his extraction team had already confirmed they were grounded fifty miles away in Geneva.

*BZZZZZT... CLICK.*

A voice broke through the speaker. It was not the gruff voice of Daniel's squad leader. It was smooth, cultured, cold, and unmistakably aristocratic—speaking with the precise, venomous cadence that had haunted the Sterling family for generations.

*"A touching scene at the lower ranger station,"* the voice said through the static. *"Truly cinematic."*

Julian stood up slowly, his body tensing, his eyes darkening with sudden dread. "Who is this?"

A low, dry chuckle crackled over the radio frequency.

*"Did you really believe Victoria was the master of the board, Julian? Did you truly think my foolish, arrogant daughter had the intellect to build a multi-billion-dollar global syndicate on her own?"*

Helena froze, her face draining of all color until she looked like a ghost. She stared at the radio as if an adder had slithered onto the table.

"Arthur...?" Helena gasped, her voice barely a horrified whisper. "Arthur Sterling is dead! He died thirty years ago!"

*"Death is merely an accounting maneuver for men with my resources, Helena,"* the chilling voice of Arthur Sterling—the patriarch, Julian’s grandfather, the true architect of the dynasty—purred through the speaker. *"Victoria was an adequate attack dog, but she was becoming sloppy. Reckless. Emotional. Her obsession with Eleanor and this ridiculous cliffside vendetta was threatening to expose our financial infrastructure in Zurich and London."*

Emily clutched baby Eleanor tightly against her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "What do you want from us?"

*"I want my heir, Emily,"* Arthur Sterling replied, his voice devoid of any human empathy. *"Victoria served her purpose by eliminating the weak branches of our tree. And now, you have delivered a healthy, genetically pristine Sterling child into the world. You didn't think I would let a Vance raise the sole inheritor of eighty billion dollars, did you?"*

Outside the cabin, the serene quiet of the dawn was violently torn apart.

The deep, rhythmic thumping of heavy rotor blades began to reverberate through the valley. It wasn't a civilian rescue craft. The sound was the unmistakable, terrifying roar of two black, unmarked military-grade attack helicopters descending through the clearing directly above the ranger outpost.

Daniel lunged across the room, scooping up his assault rifle and racking the charging handle with his good arm. "We have company! Heavy assault teams dropping on the perimeter!"

Through the frosted window, Julian saw them: eight heavily armed operatives in matte-black winter combat gear rappelling onto the snow, automatic weapons raised, moving with lethal tactical precision toward the cabin doors.

The radio crackled one final time, Arthur Sterling’s cold laugh echoing into the room like a death knell:

May you like

*"Step outside with the child, Julian. Or I will turn that cabin into a tomb before your daughter takes her second breath."*

Inside, Emily locked eyes with Julian, her knuckles white around her baby, the shadow of the gunships swallowing the morning sun.
