Chapter 22 - Bloodline of Lies

"Nobody move!" Victoria’s shriek pierced the air, shrill and vibrating with apocalyptic finality.

Her thumb hovered over the recessed red toggle on the transmitter. Across the vast, vaulted ceiling of the mountain estate, a synchronized sequence of electronic beeps began to chime—high-pitched, frantic, and deadly. Beneath their feet, the concrete foundation groaned as auxiliary demolition charges, planted deep in the cliffside anchor pillars during the estate’s renovation, armed themselves.

"You really thought I’d let you walk down this mountain victorious?" Victoria snarled, her back pressed hard against the fractured glass that overlooked the ten-thousand-foot drop. "I built this empire! I bought the judges, I bought the police, I fed this family with the flesh and bone of everyone who dared cross me! If I am going to the gallows, Julian... you, your bastard child, and these Vance parasites will burn with me!"

"Put the detonator down, Victoria!" Daniel commanded, raising his assault rifle again, his laser sight dancing directly between her eyebrows. "There are four sniper teams surrounding this ridge. You detonate those charges, and this whole peak shears off into the ravine. You won't survive the fall!"

"Do you think I care about surviving in an orange jumpsuit?" she barked, a spray of saliva catching the harsh light. "A Sterling does not rot in a cage!"

Julian slowly rose to his feet. The paralyzing shock that had shattered him moments ago had coalesced into something far deadlier: a white-hot, lethal clarity. All his life, he had been Victoria’s golden pawn—drugged, manipulated, conditioned to be her docile prince while she systematically hunted the woman he loved.

"You killed my father, didn't you?" Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stepped directly into Daniel’s line of fire, walking toward the woman who had birthed him.

Victoria’s eyes widened slightly. "Julian... stay back."

"You told me he died of a heart attack in his study when I was seven," Julian continued, ignoring the rifle aimed past him, ignoring the ticking timers echoing in the rafters. "But it wasn't a heart attack, was it? He found the offshore accounts. He found out what you did to Eleanor Vance. So you laced his nightly scotch with digitalis, didn't you, Mother?"

"He was weak!" Victoria hissed defensively, her thumb trembling slightly on the trigger. "He wanted to confess! He wanted to give half the Sterling assets to the Vance girl! He would have destroyed our name! Everything I did, I did for you! To give you an empire!"

"You didn't do it for me," Julian whispered, stopping just four feet away from her. "You did it because you are a monster who worships nothing but power."

"Julian, get away from her!" Emily screamed, stepping forward, one arm bracing her stomach, the other reaching out in frantic terror. "She’s insane! She will push the button!"

"Let her push it," Julian said without looking back. His eyes were locked on Victoria’s cold, synthetic gaze. "Because the moment she moves that thumb, she dies knowing she failed. Look at Emily, Mother. Look at her stomach. Your bloodline is ending. Her child will bear the Vance name. The Sterling empire you slaughtered dozens to protect will be dissolved, penny by penny, donated to the victims of your foundations."

"No... NO!" Victoria shrieked, her face turning crimson with uncontrollable fury. "I'll kill you first!"

Her finger smashed downward toward the red detonator button.

In that microsecond, Julian lunged.
