Chapter 27 - Edge of the Frozen Abyss

The screech of metal shearing against metal was deafening, a monstrous wail that tore through the cabin as the tram car plummeted.
"Julian!" Emily screamed, the centrifugal force pinning her to the floor. She gripped his shoulders, her eyes wide with terror not just for herself, but for the child whose kicks had suddenly turned into violent, desperate spasms within her womb.
"I have you! I won't let go!" Julian bellowed over the roar of the wind rushing through the broken windows. He locked his legs around a bolted steel bench, his arms clamping around Emily like a human shield.
Helena Vance didn't scream. Her combat-trained instincts took over instantly. Sliding across the tilted floor, she grabbed the emergency manual friction brake—a secondary clamp designed to grip the auxiliary guide wire in the event of main cable failure.
"Brace for impact!" Helena shouted, throwing her entire weight onto the secondary lever.
The friction clamps engaged with an apocalyptic shriek. Sparks sprayed into the cabin like molten rain as the brake shoes bit into the steel guide line. The car decelerated violently, throwing all three of them forward.
With a brutal, shuddering crash, the tram car smashed into the snow-drifted platform of the lower mid-station outpost, tearing through the wooden safety barriers before coming to a violent halt, tilted at a precarious thirty-degree angle over a jagged field of boulders.
Silence returned. Heavy, suffocating, and absolute.
Inside the wreckage, smoke curled from the warped metal plates.
Julian coughed, spitting out blood and pulverized glass. "Emily... Emily, speak to me!"
Emily was lying beneath him, pale, her face covered in sweat despite the sub-zero air leaking into the carriage. Her eyes flickered open, her hand immediately moving to her stomach.
"The baby..." she gasped, her voice trembling with intense pain. "Julian... my water broke. It’s happening. The baby is coming now."
Helena kicked open the warped emergency door, the fresh mountain air rushing in. She inspected Emily quickly, her experienced eyes noting the signs of advanced labor and physical shock.
"We need to get her inside the station outpost," Helena said, her voice commanding and calm despite the blood dripping from her own forehead. "There’s an emergency medical kit, a generator, and satellite communications in the ranger cabin fifty yards down the path."

Julian carefully lifted Emily into his arms, carrying her out of the ruined tram car into the blinding snow.
The blizzard was beginning to break, the dense clouds parting slightly to reveal the dawn sun bleeding across the jagged alpine horizon like fresh blood on snow. But behind them, high above on the smoking peak, nothing remained of the Sterling empire except a jagged, blackened scar on the face of the mountain.
