Chapter 23 - The Cold-Blooded Sovereign

A deafening crack shattered the tension as Daniel pulled the trigger, the high-caliber round grazing Victoria’s shoulder and shattering the floor-to-ceiling glass wall directly behind her.
Simultaneously, Julian collided with his mother. The impact knocked the detonator from her grasp, sending the small black device skittering across the blood-slicked, frost-covered tiles toward the edge of the abyss.
A hurricane of arctic wind roared through the blown-out glass wall, instantly dropping the room's temperature below freezing. Curtains whipped violently, shattered glass swirled like lethal shrapnel, and the deafening roar of the blizzard drowned out the shouts of the four people inside.
Victoria fought like a wild predator. Despite her age and her bleeding shoulder, the adrenaline of psychotic survival gave her terrifying strength. She drove her sharp fingernails across Julian’s face, ripping open his cheek, and pulled a hidden six-inch ceramic push-dagger from the lining of her fur sleeve.
"You ungrateful whelp!" she screamed into the biting wind, stabbing downward toward Julian’s throat.
Julian caught her wrist inches from his jugular, his teeth gritted in agony as they wrestled against the shattered perimeter. Beneath them, nothing but ten thousand feet of black, yawning void stretched down to jagged, snow-covered rocks.
"Daniel, shoot her!" Helena yelled, raising her shotgun, but the chaotic wrestling between mother and son made a clean shot impossible. "Julian, break her arm!"
Emily couldn't stand by. Seeing the ceramic blade inching closer to Julian’s neck, she surged forward, grabbing a heavy brass table lamp from the shattered floor. With a primal scream born of every torment, every nightmare, and every poisoned drop Victoria had inflicted on her, Emily swung the lamp with both hands, slamming it squarely into Victoria’s ribs.
The matriarch gasped, her breath stolen by the brutal impact. Julian capitalized instantly, twisting her arm with a sickening snap.
Victoria shrieked in agony as the ceramic dagger tumbled into the roaring darkness outside. But as she fell back, her boot caught the edge of Julian’s ankle, dragging him down with her onto the narrow, ice-crusted ledge extending beyond the shattered frame.
"Julian!" Emily screamed, dropping to her knees at the edge, her hand shooting out to grab his coat sleeve.
Outside, the storm ripped at them with vicious intensity. Julian was hanging half over the edge, his boots scrabbling for traction on the glazed stone, holding onto Victoria’s collar with one hand while Emily desperately held him by his jacket.
"Let go of me, Julian!" Victoria screamed, the wind tearing the words from her lips. She was dangling completely in the void, suspended only by Julian’s grip on her coat. Her manicured hands clawed at his wrists, her manic eyes staring up into the face of the son she had tried to mold into a killer.
"You pushed my wife off a cliff," Julian roared into the storm, tears freezing instantly on his cheeks. "You watched her fall! How does it feel, Mother? How does it feel to look into the grave you dug for everyone else?!"
"I am your mother!" she pleaded, terror finally breaking her iron facade. "Pull me up! Julian, please! I will give you everything! The codes, the accounts... please!"
"Your empire is dust," Julian whispered.

From inside the room, Helena stepped up beside Emily, placing a heavy hand on her niece's trembling shoulder. Helena looked down at Victoria—the woman who had hunted her sister to her death, the woman who had terrorized an innocent girl for thirty years.
"Say hello to Eleanor in hell, Victoria," Helena said coldly.
