Chapter 8 - The Legacy Obligation

The signature belonged to Dominic's uncle Vincent Russo, a man who had vanished from the family business after testifying against several associates in a federal prosecution. Dominic believed Vincent had retired overseas and wanted nothing to do with Chicago, but Lake Meridian's documents suggested he had remained connected to the financial network through intermediaries.
Naomi explained that the signature's presence did not prove Vincent currently controlled the company, since incorporation papers could remain unchanged for decades. She requested updated ownership records and asked Dominic not to contact his uncle, whose history made any private reunion a risky way to gather reliable evidence.
Dominic remembered Vincent teaching him to swim in Lake Michigan and then, years later, warning him never to confuse family loyalty with obedience. He had considered the advice hypocritical when he was young, but the events of the past week made him wonder whether Vincent had tried to escape the same structure Dominic was still struggling to dismantle.
The external auditor traced money from Lake Meridian into an investment vehicle that had acquired distressed properties near the riverfront training center. If Halcyon gained temporary control of Dominic's companies, the vehicle would benefit from a planned restructuring that could force a sale of properties protected by long-term community leases.
This made the scheme larger than a dispute over Sofia's reserve, though the threat to her future remained the cruelest part for Dominic. It also explained the urgency: a development vote scheduled for the following month would close the window for acquiring certain parcels at favorable prices.
Elena attended a meeting with former mansion employees and heard about withheld overtime, arbitrary punishments, and a supervisor who routinely told workers to ignore abusive guests. She realized that Vanessa had exploited a culture of silence Dominic had inherited rather than invented, and that justice required changing that culture even if Vanessa were convicted.
Dominic accepted a recommendation for independent workplace oversight and a binding process for unresolved wage claims, resisting his first impulse to write checks and call the problem solved. Elena told him that employees needed predictable rights more than spectacular favors, and he promised to listen even when the answers were expensive or embarrassing.
Claire met Vanessa's former college roommate, an attorney who had reached out after recognizing the manipulated clinic photograph. The woman remembered Vanessa discussing her father's belief that marrying into the Russo family would finally grant him access to a waterfront portfolio, but admitted that she had treated the comments as arrogant exaggeration rather than an operational plan.
The roommate supplied messages showing Vanessa had sought advice about conflicts of interest and trusts months before meeting Dominic. Naomi did not claim they proved criminal intent, but their timing challenged Vanessa's public explanation that she had learned of Halcyon only after the engagement party.
Graham Pike approached detectives through counsel and proposed a cooperation agreement, claiming that Richard had threatened him if he disclosed the truth about River Road. Ortiz required corroboration and warned him that cooperation would not erase responsibility for the threats, the false photographs, or his role in the attack on Elena.
Graham disclosed a storage unit containing original camera files, photographs of the old accident scene, and recordings of meetings with Richard and Vanessa. Forensic examination showed the clinic photograph had been cropped and its metadata altered, while the second image was staged with an actor in a coat resembling Claire's.
Elena watched a copy of her pantry assault being transferred into evidence and experienced a startling mixture of vindication and shame. She knew the shame belonged to Vanessa, but her body still remembered the doorway each time someone approached too suddenly from behind.
Her advocate explained trauma responses without promising that one arrest would make them disappear, and Elena began sessions with a counselor whose office overlooked a busy street. She wanted to be able to return to restaurant work by choice rather than because a frightened part of her had learned to avoid every elegant room.
Dominic visited the vocational center and told the trainees that the planned redevelopment would proceed only after its community obligations were independently reviewed. An instructor asked whether he would protect the training program if his businesses lost money, and Dominic replied that public promises were meaningless unless he gave others the means to verify them.
Meanwhile investigators located Vincent Russo in a small house in coastal Maine, where he had lived under his own name for nearly six years. He agreed to speak to federal agents and explained that he had sold his interest in Lake Meridian before Dominic's father died, producing records that contradicted the company's recent ownership filings.
The apparent forged transfer from Vincent to a Vale affiliate exposed another layer of document manipulation, but the transaction's exact beneficiary remained uncertain. Vincent also described Richard's longstanding resentment that Dominic's father had denied him control of the riverfront properties after a failed joint venture.
At an evening interview Vincent revealed a detail nobody had expected: Richard believed Dominic's father had hidden evidence of a past financial offense that could embarrass the Russo heirs if made public. Richard had tried for years to obtain a ledger known as the Blue Book, which Vincent suspected had been concealed in the basement vault.
Dominic remembered the blue canvas cover of one ledger retrieved from the cabinet and felt the old fear that legitimate reforms might be overshadowed by crimes committed before he took control. Naomi assured him that confronting historical evidence honestly was safer than allowing Richard to weaponize it through half-truths.

Vanessa read the news of Graham's cooperation and understood that her father's promise to protect her had been another control device. She contacted Naomi and offered to talk, but Naomi directed her to independent counsel rather than arrange a personal confrontation designed to satisfy Dominic's anger.
The next morning, investigators received an anonymous scan of one page from the Blue Book, displaying a payment tied to a city inspector's retirement account. Below the transaction, written in a second hand, was a name that changed the investigation's direction: Richard Vale's younger brother, Daniel.
