Chapter 10 - The Man on River Road

The man on River Road was not Dominic, as investigators first assumed, but a contract driver named Samuel Price who had been reported missing shortly before Dominic's accident. Daniel's letter described Price transporting accounting files from the warehouse and being intercepted by men claiming to represent a security company connected to Richard Vale.

Samuel's disappearance had never been resolved, and his sister had spent years asking agencies for information with few results. Ortiz contacted the family through a victim liaison, refusing to reduce their loss to a convenient piece of Dominic's current investigation without permission or care.

Price's sister, Evelyn, lived in Milwaukee and had preserved his last voicemail, in which he sounded anxious about a delivery that was supposedly routine. The message contained no accusation, but it supplied the name of a truck stop that matched a route recorded in Rosa's original Westbridge dispatch log.

Elena listened to the recording only after Evelyn consented, and was struck by the ordinary tenderness with which Samuel promised to bring his niece a souvenir. She understood suddenly that every suspicious line in the ledger belonged to a person whose family had lived through unanswered mornings, not simply to a puzzle waiting for a billionaire to solve.

The investigation established that the dark sedan observed near Dominic's crash had previously been registered to a contractor working for Richard's company. That fact supported a possible connection, but ownership had changed twice and the records could not identify who drove it on the night of the collision.

Graham admitted he had photographed the crash aftermath for the security contractor, claiming he arrived after the impact and received orders to remove a pouch of papers from another vehicle. He said he never saw Samuel and did not know whether anyone had intentionally caused the collision, an account detectives compared against time-stamped images.

One image showed a medical transport van turning from the road minutes before the first emergency call, its markings matching Rosa's employer. Another showed a figure near the roadside holding a pale folder, but the face remained indistinct despite enhancement and could not responsibly be identified as Richard or anyone else.

Dominic confronted the reality that his memories of the collision might never support the dramatic explanation his anger wanted. He agreed to tell investigators only what he genuinely recalled, even when the uncertainty made him feel less powerful than a headline promising absolute answers.

Richard's lawyers challenged the seizure of financial records and disputed Graham's credibility, both ordinary avenues of defense in a serious case. Naomi told Dominic that a lawful process had to accommodate those challenges because convictions built on shortcuts could collapse and harm every witness who had risked speaking.

Vanessa asked to meet Elena through her attorney, offering an apology and financial compensation if Elena would withdraw her complaint. Elena declined the meeting and directed all communication to her advocate, recognizing the offer might be sincere in part while refusing to let money bargain away a public account of violence.

At the mansion, Dominic assembled his staff and explained that no employee would be penalized for cooperating with investigators or reporting misconduct. He acknowledged that earlier complaints had been mishandled and invited an independent worker committee to recommend changes, a difficult admission for someone raised to believe that leaders should never reveal mistakes.

Thomas admitted he had once dismissed a report that Vanessa shouted at a housekeeper, treating it as an unpleasant personal dispute rather than a warning sign. He accepted an external review of his department and offered to step down if the findings showed he could not restore trust, instead of insisting his loyalty to Dominic should settle the matter.

Claire visited Elena at a quiet cafe after asking permission through the advocate, bringing no expensive gift and making no request for testimony. She thanked Elena for refusing to let Sofia's father ignore an injury and then asked how Elena was managing, a question so rare in the recent chaos that Elena struggled to answer.

They spoke about the difficulty of working around powerful families, and Elena admitted she had initially believed Claire was part of the staged photograph scheme because she had seen only fragments. Claire laughed sadly and said the real story of her marriage was ordinary enough to disappoint anyone seeking a scandal: two tired parents who stopped hearing one another.

The conversation reminded Elena that truth was not simply the most dramatic explanation left standing after lies collapsed. It was sometimes a collection of quiet limits, uncomfortable apologies, and people refusing to perform the roles strangers had assigned them.

Investigators located a former Westbridge dispatcher who remembered Rosa arguing with a supervisor about the River Road entry. He confirmed that the log had been changed on orders from management, and produced an old notebook listing the original dispatch number, which matched the duplicate Rosa had preserved.

The dispatcher had no knowledge of what happened to Samuel, but he remembered the supervisor saying that Richard wanted the “passenger problem” resolved before an upcoming property closing. The phrase was disturbing, yet its ambiguity meant investigators still needed evidence of what the supervisor understood and whether it referred to Samuel at all.

Naomi's audit found that Halcyon had scheduled its first asset transfer for the day after the engagement party, contingent on Dominic signing an attestation witnessed by a physician. The bank had flagged inconsistencies and placed a hold, proving that ordinary compliance controls had interrupted the scheme even before Elena confronted Vanessa.

Dominic realized with humiliation how close he had come to signing simply to stop a fabricated scandal from touching Sofia. He wrote Claire a letter acknowledging his fear and promising that all future decisions affecting their daughter would be reviewed together, then left it on her kitchen table without expecting her to reward him.

That evening Ortiz called with new evidence from the safe-deposit box: Daniel's statement identified the person who approved the falsified dispatch log, and it was not Richard Vale. It was Dominic's father, Anthony Russo.
