Chapter 2 - The Second Schedule

Vanessa stared at Dominic as the last guests filed past the ballroom doors, then said the emergency agreement was merely a precaution in case gossip about Claire harmed the Russo Foundation's reputation. Naomi Chen opened her slim leather case and replied that a precaution did not normally transfer voting control of three companies to a newly formed trust registered in another state.

Dominic felt the emotional weight of the room change from personal betrayal to something he understood even less: a prearranged transaction constructed around his daughter's illness. He asked Naomi to explain the document in ordinary language, and she turned the tablet toward him, showing that the first pages described privacy protection while Schedule B created conditional authority over his shares.

If Dominic were alleged to be medically impaired, reckless, or involved in a damaging affair, a temporary trustee could assume control for ninety days and extend it by filing a supporting affidavit. The same trustee could direct distributions from a family health reserve that included the assets Dominic had set aside for Sofia's treatment and future care.

Vanessa insisted she wanted only to protect the child, but Claire had not approved the arrangement and Dominic had never agreed to put Sofia's resources under Vanessa's oversight. Naomi pointed to the trustee's name: Halcyon Custodial Services, a corporation with no meaningful operating history and an address at a shared office center in Delaware.

Elena watched Dominic's face tighten, and realized the man who could silence a ballroom with a gesture was struggling to ask a question she had feared all evening. “Would that give her access to my daughter?” he said, and Naomi explained that money could influence guardianship disputes but the agreement alone could not change custody or confer parental rights.

Thomas returned with access logs showing that Vanessa's assistant had used a temporary credential to enter Dominic's office shortly before the engagement party. Two archive boxes had been wheeled into the service elevator, but the loading-bay cameras showed the boxes being transferred to a rented delivery van whose plates appeared deliberately obscured.

The man in gray gave his name as Graham Pike and claimed to be a freelance photographer hired to document the celebration. Elena remembered the small camera he had held near the pantry and asked whether he normally photographed assaults for wedding albums, prompting him to look at Vanessa for the first time with visible alarm.

Dominic asked Thomas to provide the footage, access logs, and witness contact details to Chicago police, and invited Elena to make a statement with an advocate present if she wished. He did not ask his guards to force anyone to confess, knowing that his family's history with intimidation could poison a legitimate case faster than an expensive defense attorney.

Vanessa tried a softer voice, reminding Dominic of the nights she had sat beside him when Sofia's surgery was postponed and the endless interviews he had faced about his father's organized-crime connections. For a moment he remembered believing she was the only person outside his fractured family who could stand beside him without flinching.

Then he looked at Elena's bruised face and asked why someone who cared about frightened children had attacked a worker for noticing suspicious paperwork. Vanessa's answer—that Elena had been snooping—confirmed that she was defending the violation of her own privacy rather than the physical safety of the person she had hurt.

Elena wanted to disappear, but Naomi asked her gently whether she had seen the envelope of photographs being assembled, and she described two versions printed in the library. The original showed Dominic and Claire standing several feet apart, while the cropped copy made the distance vanish; a separate shot showed a woman wearing Claire's coat entering a hotel at night.

Naomi noted that the photographs might be part of a scheme to influence Dominic, but warned everyone that their meaning could not be established without the source files and testimony. She asked Thomas to preserve the printers, storage devices, and employee schedules rather than delete anything in anger, while Elena wondered whether any of this would make it safe to return to work.

Dominic offered to cover her medical appointment and lost wages without conditioning that help on a statement or silence, and Elena reluctantly accepted after Naomi put the offer in writing. Elena had worked for households that called generosity a privilege and extracted repayment later, so a promise with no demand attached surprised her more than Dominic's wealth.

The police arrived shortly before midnight and separated the witnesses, photographing the pantry doorway and collecting Elena's account of the threat. Graham left after providing identification and being told to remain available for further questions, while Vanessa departed with her lawyer, insisting that Dominic would regret humiliating her publicly.

Dominic did not answer because his daughter was spending the night with Claire, and the urge to call them both nearly overwhelmed him. Instead he asked Naomi to contact Claire securely, disclose what had happened, and ensure that no one associated with Halcyon could access the child's medical files or school information without authorization.

As investigators photographed the office, Thomas found a printer log showing that the forged schedule had been printed twice on a secure machine assigned to Dominic's private counsel. Naomi frowned because only trusted staff and the outside legal firm were supposed to use it, and the breach suggested that someone inside the protective circle had helped prepare the papers.

Elena remembered a detail from the afternoon that she had dismissed as trivial: Vanessa had told Graham to “make sure the physician signs before the trustee,” although no physician had been invited to the engagement. Naomi immediately asked which physician, and Elena said she had heard the surname Bell, spoken so softly that she was not entirely sure.

Dominic sat down heavily as the name entered the room, because Dr. Aaron Bell was a physician who had examined him after a car crash three years earlier. Bell's report had documented a temporary concussion, and Dominic realized that someone might be using a genuine old medical record to support a false claim about his present judgment.

Naomi said no signature or transfer would be assumed valid until independently verified, and that her first move at daybreak would be to seek emergency civil relief against any unauthorized disposition of company assets. She turned to Dominic and asked whether he understood why the agreement had been timed for the night before his foundation's annual board meeting.

Dominic looked at the empty ballroom and finally recognized the shape of the trap: a public scandal to make him desperate, a medical assertion to make him seem unreliable, and a hidden schedule to move control while he was distracted. What he still could not explain was why Vanessa had chosen this exact week, or what Graham had meant when he said, before the police arrived, that “the original is already in the vault.”
