Chapter 11 - The Father’s Signature

Anthony Russo had been dead for twelve years, but his handwriting remained as familiar to Dominic as the engraving on the family dining table. Seeing his father's signature beneath instructions to suppress a dispatch record felt like discovering that a locked room inside his childhood home had never truly been empty.
Dominic's first impulse was to reject the document because Richard had spent years manipulating anything connected to the family. Naomi urged authentication, and a document examiner later concluded the signature was consistent with known examples while acknowledging that handwriting evidence alone could not establish the full circumstances of its execution.
Daniel's statement described Anthony ordering financial records concealed after learning that payments had been routed through the riverfront partnership. Richard, according to Daniel, had managed the operation, but Anthony feared that exposure would threaten legitimate employees and the inheritance he intended to leave Dominic.
There was no certainty yet about whether Anthony knew Samuel Price was missing or whether the falsified records had impeded a search, and Ortiz refused to let the most dramatic interpretation become a substitute for proof. Dominic nevertheless understood that his father's attempt to preserve the family empire may have helped protect people who deserved investigation.
Vincent met Dominic privately with counsel present and confessed that he had suspected Anthony's involvement but lacked documents and feared making unprovable accusations against a dead brother. Dominic asked whether Vincent had ever thought about the families harmed by silence, and the older man accepted the question without asking forgiveness.
The encounter left Dominic walking the training center's empty workshops long after sunset, listening to the hum of ventilation above rows of unused tools. He had spent years congratulating himself for building legal institutions, while rarely asking whose suffering had made the original fortune possible.
Claire found him there and said that acknowledging inherited wrongdoing did not require accepting guilt for crimes he had not committed. It did require using his control over surviving records and assets responsibly, even when disclosure threatened the reputation he had worked so hard to repair.
Dominic agreed to establish an independently administered review of historical claims connected to the riverfront businesses, funded without requiring anyone to surrender legal rights. Naomi insisted that the process be structured with community representatives and professional oversight, not as a public gesture that allowed the family to supervise accusations against itself.
Elena learned of Anthony's involvement through Ortiz and felt anger rise as she imagined her mother working nights to keep food on the table while powerful men edited logs. She asked whether the new review could help Samuel's family, and was told the surviving evidence would be referred to the relevant agencies while independent support could be offered without demanding silence.
Mateo reminded her that Rosa had preserved a duplicate because she believed truth mattered even when it could not fix everything. Elena began drafting a letter to her mother in a notebook, describing the names they had found and the choices they were making, though she could not yet bring herself to finish it.
Vanessa's cooperation continued, revealing that Richard had repeatedly referred to Dominic's inherited shame as a “pressure point.” She had believed the scheme would produce a profitable corporate restructuring, but now understood that it also aimed to prevent Dominic from releasing historical records that might expose Richard's role in the old misconduct.
Richard had offered Vanessa a future controlling interest in a development company if she married Dominic and helped secure the emergency agreement. The promise was documented in messages and a draft employment contract, giving investigators a clearer basis to examine the financial motives behind her deception.
Still, Vanessa insisted she had not known about Samuel Price's disappearance or the falsified dispatch log, and prosecutors assessed her statements against the records rather than accepting either total innocence or universal guilt. Her decision to cooperate could affect how her case proceeded, but did not undo the physical harm she had caused Elena.
Graham submitted the original camera card from River Road, explaining that he had kept it as leverage against Richard for years. Forensic analysts verified that the images preceded the copies provided earlier, and one frame showed Anthony's car arriving after Dominic had already been taken to the hospital.
The photograph weakened a theory that Anthony ordered Dominic's collision, but suggested he may have become involved in handling evidence afterward. Dominic found the distinction emotionally brutal: his father might not have endangered him directly, yet had still chosen the protection of documents over honest cooperation with investigators.
At Sofia's next appointment, the cardiologist reported encouraging results and outlined a careful treatment plan. Dominic took notes instead of making promises about miracles, and Claire squeezed his hand briefly when Sofia asked whether she could join a school camping trip the following spring.
The moment was small and profoundly hopeful, reminding Dominic that his duty was to protect an actual child rather than a family image. He returned home and authorized the release of relevant archival records under independent supervision, knowing the decision might cost him contracts and the public's trust.
Employees at the vocational center expressed anxiety that the program would close if old wrongdoing became public. Dominic met with their representatives, presented a protected operating budget, and invited community oversight of future development decisions, offering concrete safeguards rather than demanding belief in his intentions.

Then Ortiz reported that investigators had found a private insurance claim associated with Samuel Price's disappearance, listing a settlement beneficiary who had never been informed of any payment. The money had passed through an intermediary controlled by Richard, supplying a new financial lead but still leaving the missing man's fate uncertain.
Dominic stood alone in his study beside Anthony's portrait, then took it down and placed it in storage instead of destroying it. He wanted Sofia to know that loving family did not mean concealing what they had done, and he would have to learn how to teach that lesson without turning his father into either a monster or a saint.
