Chapter 7 - The Doctor Who Changed His Name

Dr. Aaron Bell had once been Aaron Bennett, a medical resident whose license history included an investigation into incomplete patient records at a private hospital. The name change was lawful and publicly documented, but Naomi wondered why he had concealed the older employment history when providing evaluations for high-profile clients.

Margaret remembered him as a brilliant, nervous young doctor who took extra shifts and appeared to be struggling with debts, although she knew nothing of later allegations. She warned Elena that a person's past mistakes did not prove guilt in a different case, and Elena appreciated the reminder while the investigation grew crowded with faces that seemed suspicious in photographs.

Ortiz obtained a voluntary interview with Bell, who admitted that he had been hired to review Dominic's accident injuries years earlier and had recently been asked by a lawyer for a copy of his old findings. He insisted he had not certified any present incapacity and seemed genuinely alarmed when shown a draft affidavit bearing his signature.

The signature resembled his, but the document contained a medical conclusion he said he had never made and a date when he had been attending a conference outside Illinois. Travel records supported that part of his account, although investigators still had to establish who had assembled the false affidavit and whether Bell had supplied materials knowingly.

Dominic learned that a previous evaluation contained errors unrelated to his competency, including an incorrect description of a medication he had never taken. He remembered dismissing the mistake at the time because he was desperate to return to work, and the oversight now felt like a small door left open for someone with a malicious purpose.

Claire asked him to distinguish between regret and responsibility, reminding him that ordinary people could not foresee every misuse of a document. He admitted that his real failure had been dismissing concerns raised by employees and relatives when those concerns interfered with the comfortable life he believed he was rebuilding.

Vanessa's lawyer submitted a demand for return of personal belongings and alleged that Dominic's release of security footage had damaged her reputation. Naomi replied through formal channels that the footage had been provided to investigators and not publicly broadcast by Dominic, preserving a distinction between seeking justice and feeding a humiliation campaign.

Elena nevertheless found her own face splashed across a sensational local website, alongside a photograph taken at the hospital without her consent. She contacted the publication to request removal and learned how powerless a person could feel when strangers found entertainment in the worst moments of her life.

Mateo suggested that she stop reading comments, but Elena said the problem was larger than her hurt feelings because people now knew where she worked and had begun sending offers to buy her story. With guidance from her advocate, she set boundaries on media contact and allowed a labor organization to speak publicly about employee safety without identifying her private medical details.

Thomas reviewed the old guest list from Dominic's engagement and discovered that a consulting executive associated with Richard Vale had attended under a different company name. The executive had left shortly after the first police officers arrived, and phone-location records obtained legally placed him near the loading bay when the document boxes were moved.

Martin Keene confessed to auditors that he had lent his security credential to Vanessa's assistant after being told the couple needed archived photographs for a surprise presentation. He knew the request violated policy, he admitted, but insisted he had not understood it involved financial files, and his hesitation to report it had made the breach harder to contain.

Dominic was furious that someone so experienced had treated security as a favor owed to the boss's fiancée, but he knew punishment could not replace a credible examination. Martin was placed on leave while investigators compared his statements against footage, schedules, and payments, leaving open the possibility that negligence and active conspiracy might have played different roles.

At St. Agnes, Margaret revealed that Rosa had once asked whether there was a way to report a falsified medical dispatch entry without publicly identifying her children. Margaret had provided contact details for a legal aid clinic, but Rosa never made the appointment because Mateo developed a serious illness that required months of care.

Elena remembered those months of hospital corridors and empty cupboards and saw how fear, poverty, and family duty had narrowed her mother's choices. She promised Mateo that they would not judge Rosa for failing to become the fearless witness people in wealthy houses could afford to imagine.

Bell called Naomi privately and said he had discovered that a former office manager, now employed by a Vale-affiliated firm, had accessed old signature templates. He offered to deliver the records to investigators, but asked that his own earlier licensing issues not be mischaracterized as proof of the current fraud.

The records revealed that the office manager had downloaded blank forms and outdated letterhead shortly before Vanessa proposed the emergency agreement. The timing was significant, yet Ortiz continued building the chain of custody because a digital access log could reveal opportunity without identifying the person who physically forged the pages.

Richard learned that Bell was cooperating and tried to persuade his daughter's lawyer to portray him as unreliable, offering confidential disciplinary records as ammunition. Vanessa refused for the first time, not from a sudden burst of innocence but because she had begun to see that every attempt to silence someone created a new set of documents and witnesses.

Dominic spent the evening helping Sofia build a cardboard space station while Claire watched from the doorway, and the simple task steadied him more than his attorneys' reports. When Sofia asked why adults sometimes lie, he told her that fear and wanting something badly could lead people to wrong choices, but that explanations never made hurting someone acceptable.

Later Naomi received a copy of a draft Halcyon resolution that named Vanessa as temporary co-trustee but placed the ultimate voting power with an unidentified “senior beneficiary representative.” Dominic thought immediately of Richard, yet the hidden title implied that another person might be waiting behind the scheme.

The answer began to emerge when the audit identified a dormant company, Lake Meridian Holdings, receiving small payments from Halcyon for “legacy obligations.” Its original incorporation papers contained a signature Dominic had not seen since his father's funeral.
