Chapter 23 - THE PHOTOS MADE MARCUS LOOK LIKE A TRAITOR—BUT HIS SECRET MEETING WITH ARTHUR HAD A VERY DIFFERENT PURPOSE

Sofia did not believe Emily immediately.
She had learned that photographs proved proximity.
Not motive.
Emily noticed.
“Good.”
Sofia frowned.
“What?”
“You don't trust me.”
“No.”
“You shouldn't.”
Victoria stared at her older sister.
“I watched them bury you.”
Emily looked at her.
“No.”
“What?”
“You watched them bury a closed coffin.”
Victoria’s face changed.
Another staged death.
Another stolen childhood.
“Why?”
Emily looked at Luis.
“Because Catherine needed one daughter visible and one invisible.”
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“Which one was I?”
“The visible one.”
“And you?”
“The heir.”
Silence.
Sofia understood.
Emily had been raised for Eden leadership.
Victoria had been raised for Ashford-Hawthorne marriage.
Two daughters.
Two plans.
Both controlled.
Emily handed Sofia a flash drive.
“Marcus’s meetings.”
Daniel took it.
They watched at Hawthorne Villa.
Video one.
Marcus meeting Arthur Bell in a parking garage.
Arthur handed him an envelope.
Video two.
Marcus meeting Samuel Kane.
Video three.
Marcus entering Catherine’s apartment.
It looked terrible.
Then Sofia noticed timestamps.
The meetings occurred after Marcus began working for Charles.
She looked at Marcus.
“Explain.”
Marcus did not deny them.
“Charles ordered me to infiltrate Eden.”
Silence.
Daniel stared.
“You never told me.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Your father made me swear.”
“He wasn't my biological father.”
“He was still your father.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
Marcus continued.
Charles knew Eden survived.
He recruited Marcus because nobody knew Charles was his biological father.
Marcus could enter the organization as Nathaniel Cole’s son.
Sofia frowned.
“So Arthur believed you were loyal to Eden.”
“Yes.”
“Samuel?”
“Yes.”
“Catherine?”
“Yes.”
Emily smiled.
“Convenient story.”
Marcus looked at her.
“You know it's true.”
“Some of it.”
Sofia turned.
“What part isn't?”
Emily looked at Marcus.
“He didn't merely infiltrate Eden.”
Marcus’s face hardened.
Emily continued.
“He became Director Gray.”
Silence.
Victoria stared.
“What?”
Emily nodded.
“Temporary designation.”
Marcus looked at Sofia.
“For eight months.”
Sofia felt betrayed.
“You ran Eden?”
“I took control to dismantle it.”
“Did you?”
“I tried.”
“How many people were experimented on during those eight months?”
Marcus said nothing.
That was the answer.
Sofia’s voice became cold.
“How many?”
“Six.”
“Children?”
“No.”
“Adults?”
“Yes.”
“Consent?”
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Not fully informed.”
Sofia stepped backward.
Daniel looked at him.
“Marcus.”
“I thought if I stopped suddenly, Arthur would expose me.”
Sofia stared.
“So you continued hurting people to preserve your cover.”
“Yes.”
“That's not infiltration anymore.”
“I know.”
Marcus looked destroyed.
“I crossed the line.”
Sofia believed him.
That did not absolve him.
Emily watched.
“You see?”
Sofia turned.
“And you?”
Emily smiled.
“What about me?”
“You were raised as Eden’s heir.”
“Yes.”
“What did you do?”
Emily’s smile faded.
“Everything they asked.”
“How many people did you hurt?”
Silence.
Victoria looked at her sister.
“Emily.”
Emily whispered:
“More than Marcus.”
Sofia appreciated the honesty.
Emily continued.
“I believed in Eden.”
“Still?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because they tested it on me.”
Sofia frowned.
“What?”
Catherine had raised Emily as an heir.
Then, at sixteen, Emily became a subject.
Memory conditioning.
Drug trials.
Isolation.
Catherine called it preparation.
Emily called it what it was now.
Abuse.
Victoria stared.
“Mom did that to you?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you come to me?”
“You were eleven.”
“I could have—”
“No.”
Emily touched her face.
“You were a child.”
Victoria began crying.
Emily continued.
“I let you believe I died because Catherine promised she would leave you alone.”
“She didn't.”
“I know.”
The sisters stood several feet apart.
Then Victoria crossed the distance and hugged her.
Emily broke.
For the first time, the controlled heir disappeared.
Only a sister remained.
Sofia looked at Marcus.
“We need the six names.”
He nodded.
“I'll give them.”
“Full records.”
“Yes.”
“You testify.”
“Yes.”
“No immunity.”
Marcus looked at her.
“I don't want it.”
Good.
Daniel asked Emily:
“Why come now?”
“Because Catherine escaped federal custody.”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
Emily had received a message.
Catherine wanted Eden restored.
Not the patents.
The behavioral network.
Arthur’s data.
Surveillance.
Prediction models.
Emily looked at Sofia.
“She needs you.”
“Why?”
“Because Arthur’s model failed when you refused to participate.”
Sofia almost smiled.
“Good.”
“He believes your behavior contains the correction.”
“That's nonsense.”
“Probably.”
Emily nodded.
“But Catherine believes it.”
Sofia looked at the group.
“Then we use that.”
Daniel frowned.
“How?”
“We let her come.”
Luis immediately objected.
“No.”
Sofia looked at him.
“Dad.”
He stopped.
The word hit both of them.
She had called him Dad.
Despite everything.
Luis’s eyes filled.
Sofia continued.
“You don't get to decide for me.”
He nodded.
“You're right.”
Growth.
Small but real.
They created a trap.
Sofia sent Catherine a message through Emily.
I’LL GIVE YOU ARTHUR’S DATA.
COME TO THE VILLA.
Catherine replied:
ALONE.
Sofia smiled.
Nobody in this family understood the word alone.
That night, Hawthorne Villa waited.
Federal agents hidden.
Marcus monitored cameras.
Emily stayed beside Victoria.
Daniel remained upstairs.
Luis with Isabella.
Elias and Margaret in the safe room.
Sofia sat beside the swimming pool.
Same place everything began.
At midnight, Catherine entered through the garden.
No gun visible.
She looked tired.
“Sofia.”
“Catherine.”
“You've ruined Eden.”
“Thank you.”
Catherine almost smiled.
“Luis raised you well.”
“He did.”
“Where is the data?”
“Safe.”
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
Catherine sighed.
“Then why invite me?”
“To ask one question.”
“What?”
“Why me?”
Catherine looked toward the pool.
“Because you were unpredictable.”
“That's it?”
“Yes.”
“You built decades of experiments because you couldn't predict one person?”
Catherine smiled.
“No.”
“We built them because humans hate uncertainty.”
Sofia waited.
“Governments. Companies. Families. Everyone wants to know what people will do.”
“And you thought you could sell the answer.”
“Yes.”
“Could you?”
“For most people.”
Sofia shook her head.
“No.”
Catherine looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because people change.”
Catherine became quiet.
Sofia continued.
“Victoria changed.”
Victoria listened from inside.
“Marcus changed.”
He closed his eyes.
“Emily changed.”
Emily cried.
“My father changed.”
Luis looked down.
“Even you can change.”
Catherine laughed.
“Too late.”
“Maybe.”
Sofia stood.
“But that's your decision.”
Catherine stared.
Then slowly raised her hands.
“I came to surrender.”
Sofia froze.
“What?”
Catherine smiled sadly.
“You expected a gunfight?”
“A little.”
“I’m tired.”
Federal agents emerged.
Catherine did not resist.
Victoria stepped outside.
“Mom.”
Catherine looked at both daughters.
Victoria and Emily.
Her face broke.
“I failed you.”
Emily whispered:
“Yes.”
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.”
Catherine cried.
“I loved you.”
Victoria answered:
“That doesn't erase it.”
Sofia recognized the sentence.
Love and harm could coexist.
Neither canceled the other.
Catherine surrendered.
It should have ended there.
Then Marcus’s alarm sounded.
He looked at his screen.
“What?”
Daniel approached.
Marcus stared.
“Someone accessed the west wing.”
“Who?”
“No biometric match.”
Sofia ran.
They reached the nursery.
Empty.
Except for one object.
A laptop.
Video playing.
Arthur Bell.
Recorded earlier.
“If Catherine surrendered…”
He smiled.
“…then phase one is complete.”
Sofia’s stomach dropped.
Daniel whispered:
“Phase one?”
Arthur continued.
“Eden was never meant to survive.”
Sofia stared.
“It was meant to produce resistance.”
Her blood went cold.
“And now…”
Arthur smiled.
“…we test what resistant people do when there is no enemy left to fight.”
The screen changed.
A map.
Red dots appeared across the country.
Thousands.
Each labeled:
EDEN COHORT.
Sofia stared.
“What are those?”
Marcus whispered:
“People.”
Arthur’s final words:
May you like
“Welcome to Phase Two.”
