Chapter 12 - THE DOORS LOCKED WITH THE FAMILY INSIDE—BUT SOFIA REALIZED SAMUEL WASN’T TRYING TO KILL THEMSmoke crawled across the ceiling.

Daniel slammed his shoulder against the nursery door.

Locked.

Federal agents worked on the electronic controls.

Nothing.

Sofia crouched beside Claire.

“Are there other exits?”

Claire shook her head.

“Not from here.”

Margaret was still staring at Adrian.

“My son.”

Adrian looked devastated.

“I’m sorry.”

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Thirty years.”

Margaret slapped him.

The sound echoed.

Sofia did not interfere.

Adrian accepted it.

“You let me believe my baby was dead.”

“I was trying to protect the program.”

Margaret slapped him again.

“Then you were protecting the wrong thing.”

Smoke thickened.

Daniel shouted:

“Family therapy later!”

Sofia searched the walls.

Samuel had trapped them.

But something felt wrong.

If he wanted them dead, he could have used poison gas.

Fire.

Explosives directly beneath the room.

Instead, the blasts had blocked exits.

Containment.

Not execution.

“He wants something.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

“Us together.”

Adrian understood.

“DNA.”

Sofia stared.

“What?”

Adrian looked around.

“This room was used for family compatibility testing.”

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“He trapped us in a lab.”

A panel opened.

Inside:

Six blood collection kits.

Sofia laughed bitterly.

“Subtle.”

Samuel’s voice returned.

“One sample from each of you.”

Daniel shouted:

“Go to hell.”

Samuel answered calmly.

“Then the doors remain locked.”

Sofia looked at the kits.

“What are you testing?”

“Truth.”

“You've lied about everything.”

“Yes.”

The admission surprised her.

Samuel continued.

“Because everyone here has lied.”

“That's your excuse?”

“No.”

“My justification.”

Sofia hated him.

But she listened.

Samuel wanted to map the actual family relationships.

Too many samples had been switched.

Records falsified.

Paternity manipulated.

He claimed even he no longer trusted Meridian’s archives.

Daniel whispered:

“He's lost control of his own experiment.”

Exactly.

Sofia looked at the others.

“Give him the blood.”

Daniel stared.

“No.”

“We can fight about privacy after we stop inhaling smoke.”

He hesitated.

Then nodded.

Samples were collected.

Sofia.

Daniel.

Margaret.

Adrian.

Claire.

Isabella.

A pneumatic tube opened.

The samples disappeared.

The ventilation restarted.

Smoke cleared.

The doors unlocked.

Daniel stared.

“He actually let us out.”

Sofia nodded.

“He needs us alive.”

That was not comforting.

Agents searched deeper.

They found no Samuel.

No children.

Only laboratories.

Records.

And one active genetic analyzer.

Results began appearing.

Margaret + Elias archived DNA:

Maternal relationship confirmed.

Margaret sobbed.

Her son had lived.

Adrian + Elias:

No paternal relationship.

Charles + Elias:

Paternity confirmed.

Daniel stared at Charles’s profile.

“My father was Sofia’s great-grandfather—”

“Biological grandfather,” Sofia corrected gently.

Daniel nodded.

“Right.”

Their relationships had become impossible to describe casually.

Then:

Elias + Sofia.

Paternity confirmed.

Sofia stared.

So that was settled.

Elias was her biological father.

Eleanor was her biological mother.

Isabella carried and raised her.

Luis raised her.

Jonathan?

Sofia suddenly remembered.

Jonathan’s earlier DNA test had said 99.99% paternity.

“That test.”

Daniel understood.

“Jonathan.”

Someone had falsified it.

Sofia felt anger.

Another manufactured father.

She called Jonathan.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Security checked the villa.

Jonathan was gone.

On his bed:

A note.

I'M SORRY.

Sofia closed her eyes.

He had known.

Perhaps not everything.

But enough.

Daniel touched her shoulder.

“Later.”

She nodded.

More results appeared.

Eleanor + Sofia:

Maternal relationship confirmed.

Then:

Samuel + Daniel.

Paternity confirmed.

Daniel stared.

Samuel really was his biological father.

Eleanor + Daniel.

Maternal relationship confirmed.

Sofia looked at Daniel.

Same biological mother.

Different fathers.

Half-siblings.

The truth finally stabilized.

Daniel laughed weakly.

“Well.”

Sofia looked at him.

“What?”

“At least one mystery got simpler.”

She almost smiled.

Then Claire’s result appeared.

Everyone stared.

CLAIRE / MATERNAL MATCH: ELEANOR HAWTHORNE.

Sofia froze.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What?”

Claire stared.

“No.”

Sofia’s heart pounded.

Claire was another daughter of Eleanor.

Another half-sister.

But how?

Eleanor had died seventeen years ago.

Claire was twenty-four.

Possible.

Another embryo.

Another gestational carrier.

Claire began shaking.

“I have a family?”

Sofia took her hand.

“Apparently a very complicated one.”

Claire laughed through tears.

Then the paternal match appeared.

Everyone went silent.

CLAIRE / PATERNAL MATCH: SAMUEL KANE.

Daniel stared.

Claire looked at him.

Same mother.

Same father.

Full siblings.

Daniel whispered:

“You're my sister.”

Claire cried.

Daniel hugged her.

It was awkward.

Unexpected.

Beautiful.

Then another result appeared.

Sofia looked.

M-22 archived DNA.

Sibling match.

M-23.

Sibling match.

M-24.

All connected.

Samuel had created multiple children using Eleanor’s genetic material.

Without consent.

Daniel’s face became rage.

“He used my mother.”

Adrian whispered:

“Yes.”

“You knew?”

“No.”

“Stop saying that!”

Daniel shoved him.

Agents intervened.

Adrian did not fight.

“I knew Meridian continued.”

“That's enough.”

Daniel turned away.

Sofia understood.

Complicity did not require knowing every crime.

Sometimes refusing to look was enough.

Then the analyzer beeped.

One final result.

UNKNOWN SAMPLE X.

Sofia frowned.

“What is that?”

A technician checked.

“The system added an existing sample.”

“Whose?”

The screen loaded.

Relationship to Sofia:

MATERNAL.

Sofia stared.

“Another child of Eleanor?”

The technician shook his head.

“No.”

“Then?”

“This is older.”

Sofia’s pulse changed.

The sample belonged to a woman.

Approximately fifty.

Relationship:

BIOLOGICAL MOTHER.

Sofia laughed.

“That’s impossible. Eleanor is my mother.”

The technician looked confused.

“According to this…”

He swallowed.

“…Eleanor isn't.”

Silence.

Sofia stared.

“But you just confirmed it.”

“Yes.”

“Then how can another woman also be my mother?”

Adrian went pale.

He understood.

Sofia saw it.

“What?”

Adrian whispered:

“Chimerism.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

Adrian looked at Sofia.

“Eleanor carried two genetic cell lines.”

Sofia stared.

“What does that mean?”

“She absorbed a twin embryo before birth.”

Silence.

“The eggs used to create Sofia…”

Adrian looked sick.

“…may not genetically belong to Eleanor.”

Sofia’s heart pounded.

“Then whose?”

Adrian looked at the unknown sample.

“Her unborn twin sister.”

Sofia stared.

A woman who had never been born could not have a fifty-year-old blood sample.

“That doesn't make sense.”

Adrian whispered:

“No.”

Then he looked terrified.

“Which means Eleanor’s twin didn't die before birth.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where is she?”

Adrian stared at the screen.

“If Sample X belongs to who I think it does…”

He swallowed.

“…she has been inside Meridian this entire time.”

Then every computer screen changed.

A live video appeared.

An elegant woman sat inside a bright white room.

Around fifty.

White hair at the temples.

Her face resembled the old photographs of Eleanor so closely that Daniel stepped backward.

The woman smiled.

“Hello, Sofia.”

Sofia stared.

“Who are you?”

The woman leaned toward the camera.

“My name is Evelyn Hawthorne.”

Then she smiled.

“And technically…”

May you like

“…I'm your mother.”
