Chapter 14 - THE FINAL DNA TEST SHOULD HAVE ENDED THE MYSTERY—INSTEAD, IT EXPOSED THE PERSON WHO HAD BEEN LYING SINCE CHAPTER ONE

Sofia laughed.
She could not help it.
Not because anything was funny.
Because after months of changing mothers, fathers, trusts, laboratories, dead people returning alive, and hidden rooms appearing inside hidden rooms, laughter was the only response her exhausted mind could produce.
“Test it.”
Everyone looked at her.
Sofia pointed toward the genetic analyzer.
“No more stories.”
Samuel opened his mouth.
“No.”
She pointed at him.
“You especially.”
He closed it.
“Blood.”
Sofia looked at Isabella.
“Yours.”
Then Evelyn.
“Yours.”
Margaret.
“Yours.”
Adrian.
“Yours.”
Daniel.
“Mine too?”
“Everyone.”
Daniel nodded.
“Fair.”
Independent federal technicians collected samples.
No Meridian staff.
No family members.
No old records.
Fresh samples.
Chain of custody documented.
Sofia watched every tube.
Hours passed.
Nobody left.
Victoria arrived after hearing Samuel had been captured.
She stood beside Daniel but did not touch him.
The distance between them was no longer hatred.
Something more complicated.
Shared damage.
The first result appeared.
Isabella Ramirez:
Biological maternity to Sofia Ramirez — 99.999%.
Sofia stared.
Isabella covered her mouth.
“My baby.”
Sofia cried.
This time she did not resist.
She hugged her mother.
Not gestational carrier.
Not substitute.
Not protector.
Mother.
Biologically and emotionally.
Both.
Samuel had been telling the truth about that.
But why had records listed Eleanor?
Second result.
Elias:
Biological paternity confirmed.
Sofia closed her eyes.
Elias and Isabella.
Her parents.
Simple.
For once.
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Congratulations.”
Sofia laughed through tears.
“On having parents?”
“Apparently that's an achievement around here.”
Then Daniel’s results.
Eleanor:
Biological maternity confirmed.
Samuel:
Biological paternity confirmed.
Daniel stared.
That remained.
Claire:
Same biological parents.
Daniel took Claire’s hand.
She squeezed it.
Then Evelyn.
Eleanor and Evelyn were identical twins.
Confirmed.
Margaret and Elias:
Maternal relationship confirmed.
Charles and Elias:
Paternal relationship confirmed.
The family tree finally had stable branches.
Then Adrian’s results appeared.
Sofia glanced.
No direct biological relationship beyond his being Jonathan’s brother.
Nothing surprising.
Until the technician frowned.
“What?”
The technician looked at Adrian.
“Your sample doesn't match the archived Adrian Vale profile.”
Silence.
Adrian froze.
Sofia slowly turned.
“What?”
The technician repeated.
“The archived DNA identified as Adrian Vale belongs to another person.”
Daniel stood.
“Who are you?”
Adrian backed away.
Security moved.
“Wait.”
Sofia’s heart pounded.
“WHO ARE YOU?”
The man they had called Adrian looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn whispered:
“No.”
He closed his eyes.
“My name is Michael.”
Daniel froze.
“Michael Kane?”
The man nodded.
Samuel’s older son.
Daniel’s half-brother.
The former Blackwood director.
The man everyone had been searching for.
Sofia stared.
“You've been pretending to be Adrian?”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Six years.”
“Where is the real Adrian?”
Michael looked toward Samuel.
Samuel said nothing.
Sofia understood.
“Dead?”
Michael nodded.
“How?”
“Samuel killed him.”
Everyone turned.
Samuel laughed.
“You killed him.”
Michael’s face twisted.
“You ordered it.”
“I ordered you to bring him to me.”
“You knew what would happen.”
Samuel shrugged.
Daniel moved toward him again.
Sofia stopped him.
“Not yet.”
She looked at Michael.
“Why assume Adrian’s identity?”
“To destroy Meridian from inside.”
“By lying to us?”
“Yes.”
“That strategy is getting old.”
Michael lowered his head.
“I know.”
Sofia stared at him.
“Were you the one who shot Elias?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
Michael looked at Victoria.
Victoria stiffened.
“Why are you looking at me?”
“Because Richard did.”
Victoria went pale.
“My father shot Elias?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To stop him from naming Samuel.”
Daniel frowned.
“But Elias named Richard.”
Michael nodded.
“He was confused.”
Samuel had spent decades planting false memories.
Even Elias no longer knew which memories were authentic.
Sofia felt sick.
“Where is Richard?”
Michael hesitated.
“I don't know.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“You worked for him.”
“Yes.”
“Where is my father?”
“I don't know.”
She slapped him.
Michael accepted it.
Sofia almost sighed.
Slapping had become a family language.
Then Isabella spoke.
“Who falsified Sofia’s maternity records?”
Michael looked at Samuel.
Samuel smiled.
“I did.”
“Why?”
“To protect her.”
Sofia laughed.
“There it is again.”
Samuel continued.
“If Richard knew Isabella’s egg had been used, he could trace Sofia directly.”
“So you listed Eleanor.”
“Yes.”
“You made everyone think I was connected to Hawthorne blood.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Hawthorne blood had legal protection.”
Sofia stared.
Samuel had hidden her inside a powerful family tree.
A lie used as camouflage.
Still a lie.
Daniel asked:
“What about the Generation Two children?”
Samuel looked at Claire.
“Most were not experiments.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
“They were children I rescued.”
“From what?”
“Richard.”
Victoria stared.
“My father?”
Samuel nodded.
Richard Ashford had funded illegal fertility clinics overseas.
Samuel claimed he folded rescued children into Meridian records to hide them.
Sofia did not trust him.
“Proof?”
Samuel pointed toward Michael.
Michael nodded reluctantly.
“Some of it is true.”
“Some?”
“Samuel rescued children.”
Claire whispered:
“And then experimented on us.”
Michael looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
Samuel snapped:
“I was trying to keep them alive!”
Sofia stared.
“There is always a noble sentence before the terrible act.”
Samuel went silent.
That landed.
Federal agents took him into custody.
This time Sofia watched the vehicle leave.
Michael surrendered.
Evelyn remained.
The Meridian dissolution continued.
By evening, Sofia felt something she had almost forgotten.
Quiet.
Then Victoria received a call.
Her face changed.
“Dad?”
Everyone turned.
She put the phone on speaker.
Richard Ashford’s voice.
“Victoria.”
She began crying.
“Where are you?”
“I'm sorry.”
“Stop saying that!”
“I need you to listen.”
Sofia approached.
Richard continued.
“Samuel didn't shoot Elias.”
Victoria frowned.
“Michael said you did.”
“I did.”
Silence.
Victoria’s face collapsed.
“Why?”
“Because Elias was going to say something that would get Sofia killed.”
Sofia stepped closer.
“What?”
Richard heard her.
“Sofia.”
“Tell me.”
“Elias remembered who paid for Meridian.”
Sofia frowned.
“Who?”
“Not me.”
“Then who?”
Richard’s breathing became ragged.
“Charles discovered it too late.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who funded it?”
Richard whispered:
“Hawthorne Global.”
Daniel froze.
“My company?”
“Before it was yours.”
“Who authorized it?”
Richard hesitated.
“Your mother.”
Daniel stared.
“Eleanor?”
“No.”
Richard’s voice trembled.
“The woman everyone thought was dead.”
Sofia’s blood went cold.
“Who?”
Richard answered:
“Isabella Ramirez.”
Silence.
Sofia turned toward her mother.
Isabella’s face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Sofia whispered:
“Mom?”
Isabella stepped backward.
Richard continued.
“Ask Isabella what she did before she became an accountant.”
Sofia stared at her.
“What did you do?”
Isabella’s eyes filled.
“I was young.”
“What did you do?”
“I didn't understand.”
Sofia’s voice hardened.
“UNDERSTAND WHAT?”
Isabella looked at Samuel being driven away.
Then at her daughter.
“I recruited the first Meridian subjects.”
Silence.
Sofia stepped backward.
Elias.
Her biological father.
The prisoner whose body had been used.
Isabella began crying.
“I didn't know what they would do.”
Sofia stared at her mother.
“You recruited Elias?”
Isabella whispered:
“Yes.”
The truth struck harder than every previous revelation.
The woman who became Elias’s partner—
the woman who gave birth to his daughter—
had first entered his life as part of the system that experimented on him.
Sofia could barely speak.
“Did he know?”
Isabella shook her head.
“No.”
“Does he know now?”
Silence.
Then a voice came from the doorway.
“Yes.”
Everyone turned.
Elias stood there.
His shoulder bandaged.
His face pale.
And his eyes fixed entirely on Isabella.
May you like
“I know now.”
