Chapter 2 - A STRANGER CLAIMED TO BE THE MAID’S DEAD FATHER—BUT THE PHOTO IN HIS HAND EXPOSED DANIEL’S FAMILY SECRET

Sofia did not remember running.
One moment she stood beside Eleanor's wheelchair beneath the bright afternoon sun.

The next, she was inside Hawthorne Villa following Daniel through a corridor of marble, glass, and stunned servants.

“My father is dead.”

Daniel did not slow down.

“So was mine.”

“That isn't funny.”

“I wasn't joking.”

Eleanor followed in her wheelchair with Marcus pushing her.

Victoria had not left.

She trailed behind them despite Daniel's order, her red dress appearing almost bloody beneath the hallway lights.

Daniel turned.

“I told you to leave.”

Victoria ignored him.

“If someone has broken into this house, I'm not going anywhere.”

Sofia looked at her.

“Convenient.”

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

Daniel raised one hand.

“Enough.”

They reached the study.

The heavy walnut door stood open.

Daniel stopped.

For twelve years, nobody had entered this room.

Dust covered most surfaces.

A large portrait of Daniel's father, Charles Hawthorne, hung behind the desk.

And sitting beneath it was a man Sofia had never seen.

Approximately fifty-five.

Weathered face.

Gray beard.

Brown jacket.

He held an old photograph.

When he saw Sofia, he stood.

His eyes filled with tears.

“Mi niña.”

Sofia stopped.

Nobody had called her that since childhood.

“Who are you?”

The man swallowed.

“Gabriel.”

Sofia shook her head.

“No.”

“My name is Gabriel Ramirez.”

“My father was Luis Ramirez.”

The man looked devastated.

“No.”

Sofia's anger rose.

“Don't.”

“Sofia—”

“Don't use my name.”

He stepped forward.

Marcus immediately blocked him.

Gabriel stopped.

“Luis raised you.”

Sofia stared.

“But he wasn't your biological father.”

Silence.

Victoria suddenly looked interested.

Daniel looked at Gabriel.

“Why are you here?”

Gabriel held up the photograph.

“Because Charles Hawthorne told me to come.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“My father died twelve years ago.”

“I know.”

“Then he didn't tell you anything recently.”

“No.”

Gabriel reached inside his jacket.

Marcus moved.

Gabriel froze.

“It's only a letter.”

He removed an envelope.

Daniel recognized the handwriting.

His father's.

Gabriel placed it on the desk.

Daniel opened it.

The letter contained instructions.

If Eleanor Hawthorne ever opened Charles's private study, Gabriel was to return.

Daniel looked up.

“How would you know?”

Gabriel pointed toward the desk.

“A pressure switch.”

Daniel searched.

Hidden beneath the drawer was a tiny mechanical trigger attached to an old transmitter.

Eleanor stared.

“Charles planned this.”

Gabriel nodded.

“For years.”

Sofia's head was spinning.

“My mother.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Isabella.”

“You knew her?”

“I loved her.”

Sofia's throat tightened.

“Then where were you?”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

“Running.”

“From what?”

He looked toward Victoria.

Victoria's face changed.

“Don't look at me.”

Gabriel ignored her.

“From the Ashford family.”

Daniel slowly turned toward Victoria.

“What?”

Victoria laughed.

“This is insane.”

Gabriel placed the photograph on the desk.

It showed a younger Isabella Ramirez.

Beside her stood Gabriel.

Charles Hawthorne.

And another man.

Sofia recognized him from society pages.

Victoria's father.

Richard Ashford.

The four appeared to be standing outside Hawthorne Villa approximately twenty-six years earlier.

Sofia stared.

“My mother knew all of you?”

Gabriel nodded.

“She worked here.”

Sofia looked at Eleanor.

“You knew.”

Eleanor began crying.

“Yes.”

Sofia felt betrayed.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because when I saw your application, I wasn't certain.”

“Certain of what?”

Eleanor looked at Daniel.

“That she was Isabella's daughter.”

Daniel stared at Sofia.

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“So that's it?”

Everyone looked at her.

“The saintly maid isn't just a maid.”

Sofia's expression hardened.

“I never claimed to be anything.”

Victoria stepped closer.

“Your mother came here looking for money.”

Gabriel exploded.

“That's a lie!”

Victoria flinched.

Gabriel pointed at her.

“Isabella tried to expose your father.”

Daniel turned.

“Expose what?”

Gabriel looked at Charles's portrait.

“Land fraud.”

The room became silent.

Twenty-seven years earlier, Hawthorne Development and Ashford Holdings had partnered on a luxury development project.

Hundreds of working-class families were displaced.

Documents had been falsified.

Properties had been purchased through shell companies.

Isabella worked in the Hawthorne accounting office.

She discovered it.

Sofia stared.

“My mother was a housekeeper.”

“Later.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“Before you were born, she was an accountant.”

Sofia remembered her mother balancing grocery receipts with impossible precision.

Numbers had always come easily to her.

“Why did she leave?”

“Because Richard Ashford threatened her.”

Victoria scoffed.

“My father would never—”

Gabriel slammed his hand against the desk.

“Your father threatened a pregnant woman!”

Victoria stopped.

Sofia's heart pounded.

“Pregnant with me?”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Why would he care?”

Gabriel hesitated.

That hesitation terrified her.

“Tell me.”

He looked at Daniel.

Then Eleanor.

Finally Sofia.

“Because Charles Hawthorne was going to protect Isabella.”

Daniel frowned.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Gabriel looked toward the old photograph.

“Because Charles believed the baby might be his.”

Silence.

Sofia stopped breathing.

Daniel stared.

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Victoria whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Sofia stepped backward.

“No.”

Gabriel quickly continued.

“He was wrong.”

Sofia looked at him.

“What?”

“Charles wasn't your father.”

“Then why did he think he was?”

Gabriel's face filled with shame.

“Because Isabella and Charles had been together before she met me.”

Daniel sat down.

Sofia looked at him.

If Charles had been her father, Daniel would have been—

No.

Gabriel continued.

“Isabella became pregnant months after their relationship ended.”

“Then why the confusion?”

“Richard forged medical records.”

Daniel looked up sharply.

“Why?”

“To control Charles.”

Gabriel nodded.

Richard Ashford convinced Charles that Sofia might be his child.

Then used the possibility to blackmail him.

Charles transferred property.

Shares.

Influence.

And eventually half the estate into a hidden trust under Isabella's name.

Sofia stared.

“My mother never mentioned any estate.”

“She never knew.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“Charles created it after she disappeared.”

“Disappeared?”

“My mother died of cancer.”

Gabriel stared.

“No.”

Sofia's blood went cold.

“What?”

“Isabella did have cancer.”

He swallowed.

“But cancer wasn't what killed her.”

Sofia could not speak.

Gabriel continued.

“Someone accelerated her death.”

Victoria backed toward the door.

Daniel noticed.

“Victoria.”

She stopped.

“Where are you going?”

“I need air.”

“No.”

Daniel walked toward her.

“You stay.”

Victoria looked at Gabriel.

“You have no proof.”

Gabriel nodded.

“Actually…”

He opened the photograph frame.

Inside was a memory card.

“…Isabella did.”

Victoria's face drained of color.

Daniel took the card.

They inserted it into an old computer.

One audio file.

Twenty-six minutes.

Daniel pressed play.

Isabella's voice filled the room.

Sofia's knees nearly failed.

Her mother.

Younger.

Terrified.

“If anyone finds this recording, Richard Ashford knows what Charles did.”

Victoria whispered:

“Turn it off.”

Nobody moved.

Isabella continued.

“He knows Charles created the trust.”

Daniel stared.

“He knows the money belongs to my daughter.”

Sofia covered her mouth.

Then Isabella said:

“And if anything happens to me, look at Richard's daughter.”

Everyone turned toward Victoria.

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

The recording continued.

“She is only nine years old now. She has done nothing wrong.”

Victoria froze.

Sofia stared.

Nine years old.

Isabella had not been accusing Victoria.

She had been protecting her.

Isabella continued.

“But Richard is building his future through her.”

Daniel's expression changed.

The Ashford marriage.

Victoria and Daniel.

It had not begun as romance.

It had been planned decades earlier.

Gabriel whispered:

“Richard wanted Victoria inside the Hawthorne family.”

Daniel stared at his fiancée.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Did you know about the trust?”

Victoria hesitated.

That was enough.

Daniel's face hardened.

“When?”

Victoria began crying.

“Last year.”

Sofia stepped forward.

“You knew my mother's name?”

“Yes.”

“And when you saw my employment file?”

Victoria said nothing.

Sofia understood.

“You recognized mine.”

Victoria's silence answered.

Daniel stared.

“You knew who Sofia was from the first day she worked here.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Victoria's expression changed.

“Because everything was finally going to be mine!”

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Nobody spoke.

Victoria realized what she had admitted.

Daniel looked at her as if seeing a stranger.

“The marriage.”

Victoria began shaking.

“Daniel…”

“Was it ever real?”

“Yes!”

“Then why did you hide this?”

“Because your father left half the estate to a woman who cleaned houses!”

Sofia's face hardened.

“My mother was more than her job.”

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“So are you, apparently.”

Eleanor spoke.

“Victoria.”

Everyone turned.

The elderly woman's voice was calm.

“I didn't confront you because of the money.”

Victoria stared.

Eleanor continued.

“I confronted you because of what I found in your room.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Victoria's face became white.

“Eleanor.”

Sofia remembered the bat.

That was why Victoria had been desperate.

Eleanor looked at her son.

“A bottle.”

“What bottle?”

“Medication.”

Daniel frowned.

“For what?”

Eleanor's voice trembled.

“Not hers.”

Victoria moved.

Marcus blocked the doorway.

Eleanor continued.

“The label had been removed.”

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“Whose medication?”

Eleanor whispered:

“Mine.”

Silence.

Sofia felt sick.

Eleanor continued.

“For three months, Victoria has been bringing me tea every evening.”

Daniel's face transformed.

“My mother has been getting weaker for three months.”

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

“The doctors couldn't explain it.”

“No!”

Eleanor began crying.

“I sent one tablet to a private laboratory.”

Daniel's voice became almost inaudible.

“What was it?”

Eleanor looked at Victoria.

“A blood thinner.”

Sofia looked at Eleanor's frail hands.

The bruising.

The dizziness.

The weakness.

Victoria screamed:

“THAT DOESN'T PROVE ANYTHING!”

Daniel approached her.

“You were poisoning my mother?”

“No!”

“Then why did you raise a baseball bat at her when she threatened to tell me?”

Victoria stopped.

There was nowhere left to hide.

Then the computer suddenly beeped.

A second audio file appeared.

Nobody had selected it.

Sofia frowned.

“What is that?”

Gabriel stared.

“I've never seen it.”

The filename:

FOR SOFIA ONLY.

Sofia's hands trembled.

She pressed play.

Her mother's voice returned.

Older this time.

Weak.

“Sofia…”

Tears immediately filled Sofia's eyes.

“If you're hearing this, then you found the Hawthornes.”

Sofia sat down.

Isabella continued.

“There is something I never told you.”

Gabriel looked confused.

Sofia listened.

“Luis loved you as his own.”

Her throat tightened.

“He was your father in every way that mattered.”

Gabriel lowered his head.

Then Isabella said:

“But Gabriel isn't your biological father either.”

Sofia slowly looked at him.

Gabriel's face went blank.

“What?”

Isabella continued.

“Gabriel believed you were his.”

Sofia stood.

Gabriel whispered:

“Isabella…”

“But there was one man who knew the truth.”

Daniel stared at the speakers.

“Charles Hawthorne.”

Sofia's heart stopped.

Isabella continued.

“Charles wasn't your father.”

Sofia exhaled.

Then:

“He was protecting the man who was.”

Sofia stared at Daniel.

Daniel stared back.

Isabella's final sentence came through the speakers.

“Sofia, your biological father is still alive.”

The recording ended.

A knock came from the study door.

Everyone turned.

An elderly man stood outside.

Eleanor saw him.

Her face became pure terror.

The stranger smiled at Sofia.

And said:

May you like

“Hello, daughter.”
