Chapter 8 - The Financial Autopsy

Julian slumped against his leased sports car, cold sweat pouring down his temples, soaking the collar of his expensive bespoke shirt.

Chloe was hyperventilating beside him, tossing her luxury shopping bags onto the dirt driveway in sheer disgust and horror.

Evelyn adjusted her gold-rimmed glasses, turning the page of her dossier with clinical, methodical precision.

“Let us review your current financial standing, shall we, Julian?” Evelyn said, her voice sounding like the reading of a death sentence.

“Your logistics firm, Sterling Global Logistics, which you bragged about building from the ground up?”

“It was capitalized through an eight-million-dollar convertible subordinated loan issued directly by the Hawthorne Family Trust.”

“Clause fourteen, subsection B of that debt agreement clearly states that any act of moral turpitude or marital dissolution gives the trust the right to call that debt due in full with zero notice.”

“At eight-fifteen this morning, Elena exercised that clause.”

“Your company’s operating accounts across five banking institutions have been completely frozen by federal court injunction.”

“Your board of directors met via emergency teleconference thirty minutes ago; they have unanimously stripped you of your CEO title and voted to liquidate your shares to satisfy the outstanding debt.”

Julian stared at the gravel beneath his feet, his mind fracturing as every pillar of his manufactured reality collapsed into dust.

“My… my shares…” he choked out, barely audible.

“Are worthless,” Evelyn stated bluntly.

“Furthermore, we performed a full forensic audit of your corporate expense accounts over the last twenty-four hours.”

“We discovered approximately four hundred and eighty thousand dollars in unauthorized company expenditures used for non-business purposes.”

Evelyn glanced over the top of her glasses directly at Chloe, who shrank back under the piercing gaze.

“That includes the Cartier diamond bracelet currently sitting in your shopping bag, Miss Vance.”

“It includes the lease on your luxury high-rise condominium in Alexandria, which was paid through a dummy corporate account registered to Julian’s firm.”

“And it includes the first-class tickets to the Maldives you two booked for next week.”

“All of those funds belonged to the Hawthorne trust.”

“Civil fraud charges were filed in federal court two hours ago, and a criminal referral has already been delivered to the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.”

Chloe gasped, tearing the shopping bags away from herself as if they were infected with radioactive waste.

“I didn't know!” Chloe cried, her voice cracking into frantic, self-serving desperation.

“I had nothing to do with this! He told me he was spending his own money! He told me his wife was a broke orphan who trapped him with a pregnancy!”

“I’m the victim here, you can’t arrest me!”

“You can explain that to the federal investigators, Miss Vance,” Evelyn said dismissively.

Julian slowly raised his head, his face a hollow, lifeless mask of complete ruin.

“Where is Elena?” Julian pleaded, tears of pure terror finally welling in his arrogant eyes.

“Let me talk to her, Evelyn, please! She wouldn't do this to me! She’s the mother of my child! We can fix this!”

Evelyn’s face darkened into an expression of sheer disgust that made Julian flinch.

“The mother of your child?” Evelyn spat, her words dripping with absolute venom.

“The woman you abandoned while her abdomen was being cut open?”

“The woman whose seven-day-old son you endangered by turning her home into a private brothel?”

“You didn't care about the mother of your child when you were laughing on that bed yesterday afternoon.”

“Elena is not taking your calls, Julian.”

May you like

“In fact, as of ten minutes ago, a preliminary protective order was granted by a circuit judge barring you, your mistress, and your mother from coming within one thousand feet of Elena or baby Leo.”

As if on cue, the distant sound of approaching sirens began to wail through the peaceful Virginia countryside, growing louder and more terrifying with every passing second.
