Chapter 6 - The Woman at the Iron Gates

By two o’clock the following afternoon, Julian and Chloe were returning to the estate after an extravagant lunch at an elite country club.
Julian was driving his leased charcoal-gray Porsche 911, with Chloe sitting in the passenger seat surrounded by luxury shopping bags.
The shopping trip hadn't gone entirely smoothly; Julian’s corporate card had been declined twice at the luxury boutiques, forcing him to use a personal credit line with a crippling interest rate.
He had brushed it off as an administrative glitch by his accounting department, determined not to let anything ruin his triumphant mood.
“Tonight, we’re having Martha cook that dry-aged wagyu beef from the cellar,” Julian announced as he guided the sports car up the winding, tree-lined private driveway.
“And tomorrow, I’m calling a demolition team to gut the nursery and start your walk-in closet, Chloe.”
“You’re the absolute best, Julian,” Chloe purred, running her fingers through her dyed blonde hair while admiring the massive stone facade of the mansion ahead.
As the Porsche crested the final hill leading to the estate’s grand wrought-iron security gates, Julian’s foot instinctively tapped the brake.
The heavy security gates, which were normally programmed to open automatically upon sensing his vehicle’s transponder, remained firmly shut.
Parked directly across the estate’s private driveway was a sleek, midnight-blue armored Mercedes Maybach.
Standing beside the Maybach, leaning casually against the polished chassis, was a woman dressed in an impeccably tailored charcoal pantsuit.
Her silver hair was pulled back into a razor-sharp, flawless bun, and her piercing blue eyes looked through the Porsche’s windshield like laser sights.
It was Evelyn Reed herself.
Julian slammed the Porsche into park, his chest tightening with a sudden, irrational surge of panic that he quickly masked with bravado.
“What the hell is this ambulance chaser doing on my private property?” Julian snapped, stepping out of the sports car into the crisp afternoon air.
Chloe stepped out of the passenger side, her designer sunglasses pushed up onto her forehead, her arms crossed in immediate hostility.
“Can we help you, lady?” Chloe called out condescendingly.
“This is private property, and you’re blocking the master’s driveway.”
Evelyn Reed didn't even acknowledge Chloe’s existence; to a legal titan who handled billion-dollar corporate mergers, Chloe was an invisible speck of dust.
Evelyn held a thick, heavy black leather folder in her left hand, embossed with gold legal seals.
She took three slow, deliberate steps toward Julian, the sound of her designer heels clicking rhythmically against the asphalt like the countdown on a time bomb.
Julian forced a patronizing, confident grin onto his face, thrusting his hands deep into the pockets of his designer trousers.
“Evelyn Reed,” Julian sneered, shaking his head.
“Did my pathetic little ex-wife really pay you to come stand out here in the cold like a glorified courier?”
“I hope she gave you a hefty retainer, because once this divorce gets into discovery, she’s not going to have a single penny left to pay your hourly rate.”
Evelyn stopped three feet from him, her expression completely unreadable, radiating the chilling calm of an executioner preparing the noose.
“Julian Sterling,” Evelyn began, her voice carrying a terrifying, velvet resonance.
“I am here to formally serve you with divorce petitions filed this morning under expedited emergency jurisdiction in the Fourth Judicial Circuit of Virginia.”
Julian laughed dismissively, waving his hand in the air as if swatting away an annoying fly.
“Keep the papers, Evelyn, mail them to my corporate office like everyone else!” Julian scoffed, turning back toward his Porsche.
“Now move that oversized hearse out of my driveway before I have my private security tow you off my land!”
Evelyn didn't move an inch.
She simply opened the thick black folder, exposing crisp, certified documents bearing the embossed red wax seal of the Virginia Supreme Court Land Registry.
“You won’t be calling any security, Julian,” Evelyn stated, her voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute finality.
“Because you don't own the security team, you don't own the driveway, and you don't own a single blade of grass on this three-hundred-acre estate.”
Julian froze, his hand hovering over the Porsche’s door handle.
“What did you just say?” he whispered, his smirk beginning to fray around the edges.
May you like
Evelyn looked directly into his eyes and delivered the sentence that would dismantle his entire manufactured reality.
“This mansion belongs to your wife.”
