Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the Harbor

Emily stopped dead in her tracks on the rain-slicked dock, water streaming down her face, plastering her dark hair against her bruised neck.

The man stepped off the gangway and walked onto the dock. He moved with a slight limp, his graying hair cropped short, his jaw etched with the harsh lines of a man who had survived years in exile. In his hand, he held a warm wool coat.

"You took your sweet time, Emily," Arthur Vance said, his voice deep, gravelly, and unmistakably alive.

"Dad..." Emily choked out, her knees threatening to buckle under the sheer weight of adrenaline and emotion.

Arthur closed the distance, opening the thick coat and wrapping it tightly around his daughter’s shaking shoulders. He pulled her into an embrace that smelled of engine oil, salt water, and home. Emily buried her face in his chest, finally letting the tears fall—not from Margaret’s blows, and not from Daniel’s deceit, but from the impossible relief of survival.

"I thought they were going to intercept you at the church," Arthur whispered, kissing the top of her wet head. "When my informants told me Margaret had laid hands on you..."

"I had to let it play out," Emily said, stepping back and wiping the rain from her eyes. "If Margaret hadn't lost control, Daniel wouldn't have pulled the trigger on the public audit. And if Daniel hadn't pulled the trigger, the feds wouldn't have had the complete cryptographic keys to both their accounts."

"The Sterling empire is in ruins," Arthur said, looking back up the hill toward the illuminated manor where federal lights flashed against the stormy sky. "By dawn, trading on Sterling Maritime will be frozen. The DOJ will seize the fleet."

"Not the entire fleet," Emily corrected, a slow, dangerous smile emerging through her bruises.

Arthur looked at her, his eyebrows raising in surprise. "What did you do, Emily?"

"Daniel was so desperate to protect his assets from me before the wedding that he signed an offshore irrevocable asset transfer," Emily revealed, reaching into the waterproof lining of the wool coat to pull out a encrypted USB drive. "He thought he was transferring the company’s original patents—your ship designs, Dad—into a blind trust that only his signature could unlock. But the lawyer he used to draw up that blind trust wasn't his."

Arthur stared at his daughter, realization dawning across his weathered face. "David Chen."

"Uncle Chen," Emily nodded. "Your oldest partner. As of midnight, the patents for every vessel in the Sterling fleet, along with sixty percent of their shipping terminal leases, belong exclusively to Vance Maritime Logistics."

Arthur let out a low, disbelieving laugh that turned into a roar against the thunder. "You didn't just avenge me, Emily. You took their entire world."
