Chapter 7 - The Vanishing Bride

"Don't move, Mr. Sterling!" Agent Miller’s voice rang out like a bullwhip.

Two plainclothes federal officers closed in instantly, intercepting Daniel mid-stride and slamming him down against the mahogany bar table. Champagne flutes shattered onto the floor, spraying vintage wine across Daniel’s pristine tuxedo.

"Get your hands off me!" Daniel roared, thrashing against the officers' weight. "Do you know who my family is?! We bankroll the governor! We fund your damn department!"

"Save it for your arraignment, Daniel," Agent Miller said coldly, clicking steel handcuffs around Daniel’s wrists with a definitive, metallic snap.

The ballroom erupted into sheer pandemonium. Wealthy guests screamed, pushing toward the exits as more federal agents flooded the estate through the terrace doors. Margaret Sterling let out a deranged cackle of laughter from the center of the room, seeing her traitorous son pinned to the bar—until another agent stepped up behind her, clicking a second pair of cuffs around her wrists.

"Margaret Sterling, you are also under arrest for conspiracy, wire fraud, and the attempted destruction of corporate evidence," an agent announced.

Margaret’s laughter died in her throat. "Wait! No! I brought you the files! I gave you her name!"

"And her files gave us twenty years of your offshore tax shelters," the agent replied bluntly, marching the screaming matriarch toward the storm outside.

Amidst the swirling sirens, the flashing red and blue lights reflecting against the grand windows, and the chaotic stampede of New York’s humiliated elite, Emily didn't wait to watch the show.

She slipped through the servants' entrance behind the grand kitchen, kicking off her high heels and sprinting into the driving rain.

The cold water instantly drenched her silk wedding dress, plastering the ivory fabric to her skin. Her bruised cheek throbbed with every heavy heartbeat, but for the first time in ten agonizing years, Emily felt like she could breathe.

She ran down the winding stone path that led toward the private Sterling marina, where the dark waters of the Long Island Sound churned under the thunderstorm. But as she reached the wooden docks, the blinding beams of high-intensity marine headlights suddenly flashed on, pinning her in a stark white circle of light.

A sleek black offshore yacht was idling by the pier. Standing at the helm, sheltered from the rain under a black umbrella, was a man Emily had believed was dead for over a decade.
