Chapter 10 - Ashes of the Sterling Empire

Three months later.

The morning sun broke over the New York harbor, casting golden light across the calm waters of the Hudson River.

On the rooftop terrace of the newly rebranded Vance Maritime Headquarters in Battery Park, Emily Vance stood holding a cup of black coffee, watching the cargo ships glide past the Statue of Liberty.

The Sterling name was officially erased from the skyline. Margaret Sterling had accepted a plea deal that sentenced her to eight years at a federal correctional facility in upstate New York, while Daniel was awaiting trial on multiple counts of racketeering, wire fraud, and aggravated conspiracy, facing up to twenty-five years without parole. The family fortune had been liquidated to pay hundreds of millions in back taxes, restitution to defrauded pension holders, and legal fees.

A gentle knock on the terrace door announced her father. Arthur Vance walked out, looking revitalized, holding a fresh legal document in his hands.

"The final transfer went through this morning," Arthur said, handing the papers to Emily. "Every former employee who was fired during Margaret’s reign has been reinstated with full back pay and benefits. The Sterling trust is completely dissolved."

Emily looked down at the documents, her fingers tracing the clean, unblemished logo of Vance Maritime.

"Are you satisfied, Emily?" her father asked gently, studying his daughter’s calm profile against the morning horizon. "You spent five years in the dark with those monsters."

Emily thought back to that terrifying afternoon in St. Jude’s Cathedral—the agonizing pain of Margaret’s hand tearing her hair, the sting of the slaps across her face, the deceptive warmth of Daniel’s arms lifting her from the bloody floor, and the suffocating realization that she was surrounded by vipers.

She touched her cheek. The bruises were long gone. The torn veil was locked away in an evidence locker, a relic of an empire that thought it was untouchable.

"I’m not just satisfied, Dad," Emily said, turning to her father with a clear, radiant smile that held no fear, no hesitation, and no regret. "I’m free."

She set her coffee down, turned her back on the memories of the Sterling dynasty, and walked through the glass doors into the boardroom where her future was waiting.
