Chapter 2 - The Sins of the Dynasty

The bridal suite descended into dead silence, broken only by the ragged wheezing of Emily’s breath on the marble floor.
Margaret Sterling stood clutching the manila envelope against her designer silk dress, her chest heaving as four burly security guards in dark suits rushed into the room, their faces pale as they realized who they were being ordered to restrain.
"Daniel, have you lost your mind?!" Margaret’s voice broke into a high, shrill pitch of outrage. "I am Margaret Sterling! You cannot order your own men to touch me! Tell them to stand down this instant!"
"I am the Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Global, Mother," Daniel said, his voice entirely void of human warmth. "I control the payroll, I control the private security contracts, and as of seven o'clock this morning, the Board of Directors voted five to two to strip you of all voting rights and your executive stipend. You have no authority here. You have no authority anywhere."
Margaret’s face morphed from aristocratic rage to genuine panic. Her trembling fingers tore into the flap of the envelope. As she pulled out the top document, her eyes scanned the bold headers: *INTERNAL FORENSIC AUDIT: EMBEZZLEMENT OF PENSION ASSETS, 2018–2024.* Beneath it lay scanned copies of offshore shell corporations in the Cayman Islands—bearing Margaret’s private digital signature.
"This is falsified," Margaret sputtered, her voice betraying her terror. "She gave this to you! That orphaned peasant fed you lies to tear our family apart!"
Daniel ignored her completely. He knelt down beside Emily, wrapping his strong arms around her shivering frame. Gently, with the touch of someone handling shattered glass, he lifted Emily off the marble floor and cradled her against his chest. Emily buried her bruised, bleeding face into the crook of his neck, her sobs finally breaking through her shock.
"I've got you, Em," Daniel murmured against her torn hair, his voice cracking with agony. "I swear to God, you're safe now. No one will ever touch you again."
"Daniel, you listen to me!" Margaret shrieked as two guards cautiously stepped forward, taking her by the elbows. "You marry that girl, and you sign your own death warrant! You don't know who her father was! You don't know what she’s here to do!"
"Get her out," Daniel commanded, without looking back. "Escort Mrs. Sterling off the cathedral grounds. If she steps within five hundred feet of this sanctuary, call the NYPD and hand them that folder."
The guards tightened their grip. Margaret struggled, kicking and screaming obscenities that scandalized the church clergy hovering in the corridor, until the sound of her frantic protests faded down the long stone hall.
Emily clung to Daniel’s lapels, her hands shaking violently. "Daniel... the dress... the heirloom dress is ruined. There's blood on it..."
Daniel looked down at the ruined silk, then up into Emily’s bruised, swollen eyes.
"The dress is just fabric, Emily," he said softly, using a linen handkerchief to gently dab the blood from her lip. "The wedding is still happening. In thirty minutes. If you still want to marry me."
Emily blinked through her tears, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked into Daniel's clear hazel eyes—eyes that looked back at her with absolute adoration. But behind that adoration, deep within the shadows of Daniel’s expression, Emily saw something else: a cold, calculated desperation that made the hair on the back of her neck stand up.

"Yes," Emily whispered, swallowing the copper taste of blood. "We finish this."
