Chapter 5 - The Wrath of the Matriarch

Victoria’s charge halted abruptly when she met Elena’s gaze from less than three feet away.
Elena did not raise her fists; she did not step back; she merely stared down at Victoria with pupils as cold as arctic ice.
The sheer, predatory stillness in Elena’s eyes caused Victoria’s manicured hand to freeze mid-air in involuntary hesitation.
"Take one more step toward me, Mrs. Sterling, and you will join your son in that pile of seafood," Elena whispered.
The whisper was so quiet, so devoid of fear, that it sent a violent shiver straight down Victoria's spine.
Before Victoria could formulate another screech, a booming, thunderous voice erupted from the French double doors.
"WHAT IN THE HELL IS GOING ON OUT HERE?!"
Richard Sterling, the sixty-year-old patriarch and CEO of Sterling Global, strode onto the terrace like a furious bull.
He had just concluded a private million-dollar phone call in the VIP lounge, only to find his gala in utter ruin.
Behind him trailed two personal bodyguards dressed in matching charcoal suits with earpieces.
Richard took in the catastrophic scene: the shattered glass, the melting ice, his son groveling in raw fish, and his wife shrieking.
"Richard! Look at what this psycho did to Garrett!" Victoria wailed, running to her husband's side with fake tears streaming.
"She attacked him! She shoved him into the buffet! She tied up an employee to make a scene and blame us!"
Victoria’s shameless, brazen lie caused Toby to let out a quiet, heartbroken gasp of terror behind Elena.
"No... that's not true... she's lying..." Toby whimpered, his teeth still chattering from the freezing ice bath.
Richard’s face flushed an ugly, dangerous shade of crimson, the veins in his thick neck bulging against his collar.
He looked at Garrett, who was now being helped to his feet, covered in pink cocktail sauce, limping pathetic and sniffling.
Then, Richard’s furious, arrogant gaze locked entirely onto Elena Vance.
"Who the hell is responsible for this property right now?" Richard roared, stepping forward with his bodyguards trailing.
"I am," Elena answered without a moment's hesitation, stepping slightly forward to keep Toby completely shielded.
"I am Elena Vance, Managing Director of Azure Horizon Resort."
Richard let out a venomous, barking laugh filled with absolute corporate superiority.
"A director? A glorified hotel manager? You lay your filthy hands on my son during my private celebration?"
Richard reached inside his tailored tuxedo jacket and pulled out an ultra-slim titanium smartphone.
"Do you have any idea who I am, little girl?" Richard sneered, stepping so close his hot breath hit Elena's forehead.
"I personally know the chairman of your parent corporation. We play golf together in Dubai every single spring."
"I spend more money on fuel for my private yacht in a month than this pathetic resort pays you in five years."
"You are done. Your career in hospitality is over tonight. You will never manage a roadside motel when I’m through with you."
He jabbed his thick finger violently into the air, mere inches from Elena’s nose.
"Get on your knees right now. Apologize to my wife, apologize to my son, and fire that clumsy, filthy boy behind you."
"If you do not get on your knees this very second, I will buy this entire resort tomorrow morning just to burn it down."
The crowd of elite guests watched with bated breath, entirely certain that Elena’s spirit was about to be broken.
In their world, Richard Sterling’s threats were not hollow; they were absolute, devastating death sentences to normal careers.
A lesser person would have broken into tears, stammered apologies, and sacrificed the young waiter to save their own skin.
Victoria smirked triumphantly from behind her husband's shoulder, crossing her emerald-clad arms across her chest.
Garrett sneered through his coating of fish scales and frosting, eager to watch the woman who struck him crawl in the dirt.
Toby was trembling so hard his knees gave out, his hands clutching desperately at the back of Elena’s blazer.
"Miss Vance... please... don't lose your job for me... I'll apologize..." Toby wept, trying to step around her.
Elena did not move a single muscle in response to Richard's towering, tyrannical threats.

She slowly reached back with one hand, gently pushing Toby back behind the impenetrable fortress of her silhouette.
She looked Richard Sterling dead in his bloodshot, arrogant eyes and smiled a slow, razor-sharp, chilling smile.
