Chapter 28 - TRAPPED IN THE DEPTHS

The sudden silence inside the subterranean vault was terrifyingly complete, broken only by the rhythmic hum of the air filtration unit.

Marcus rushed up the steel spiral stairs, throwing his shoulder against the underside of the heavy brass hatch with all his strength.

"It’s sealed electronically from the outside!" Marcus shouted, his voice echoing off the cold steel walls of the bunker.

I turned on my tactical flashlight, sweeping the beam across the walls to identify the emergency electrical conduit lines.

My phone displayed zero bars of cell service, completely isolated by eight feet of solid granite and reinforced concrete.

"Don't panic," I said calmly, forcing my breathing to remain steady as I opened my equipment bag.

"Every sealed vault constructed under historic Massachusetts building codes requires a manual mechanical bypass valve," I explained.

I pointed the flashlight toward a bright red iron lever mounted behind a high-voltage junction box near the air filtration unit.

Marcus grabbed a steel crowbar from his toolkit, leveraging it against the protective casing of the junction box to reach the lever.

With a shower of sparks and a loud mechanical clank, the pneumatic pressure released, allowing the brass hatch above to open an inch.
