Chapter 27 - THE SECRET ARCHIVE

A steel spiral staircase led down into a clean, climate-controlled subterranean room lined with fireproof filing cabinets.

Unlike the dusty decay of the mansion above, this vault had been maintained by an automated power system running off an independent generator.

Dozens of metal legal boxes bore labels marked with prominent corporate names from Boston, New York, and San Francisco.

At the center of the room sat a solid oak desk holding a heavy vintage tape recorder and a stack of leather-bound ledgers.

I opened the top ledger, recognizing Eleanor Caldwell’s sharp, aggressive handwriting across the opening pages.

The records detailed thirty years of illegal financial transactions between the Caldwell Group, Sterling Vance, and corrupt state officials.

More shockingly, the ledgers revealed that my father’s original architectural designs had been stolen to build illegal holding rooms for corporate extortion.

"Your father discovered what they were doing with his structural designs, Miss Bennett," Marcus realized, reading over my shoulder.

"He tried to expose them in 1996, but Eleanor Caldwell used her political influence in Boston to destroy his reputation."

Suddenly, the heavy steel hatch above us slammed shut with a thunderous metallic bang, locking us in total darkness.
