Chapter 8 - A Father's Wrath

The intersection near Grand Avenue had been transformed into an urban war zone within seconds.
Four heavy-duty construction dump trucks had jackknifed across the four lanes of traffic, completely sealing off the federal convoy from any outside support or escape. From every alley, every side street, black sedans poured into the intersection, their headlights illuminating the foggy night like the glowing eyes of wolves.
Dozens of armed men in black coats stepped out, raising automatic rifles.
These weren't common street thugs. These were the elite soldiers of the Moretti syndicate—men who had sworn blood oaths to Luca’s family, men who revered Elena like a saint, and who saw this attack on Isabella as an unforgivable sacrilege.
“Engage! Engage hostile targets!” the federal tactical commander screamed over the radio, kicking open the doors of his armored vehicle and returning fire.
Gunfire ripped through the foggy avenue. High-powered rifle rounds shredded the government vehicles, blowing out windshields and sending federal agents scrambling for cover behind engine blocks.
Through the haze of gunsmoke and flashing red-and-blue emergency lights, a lone figure walked straight down the center of Grand Avenue.
Luca Moretti.
He didn't run. He didn't duck. In his left hand, he carried a heavy sledgehammer; in his right, an automatic Benelli shotgun.
A federal agent leaned around an overturned SUV, raising his M4 rifle to take Luca down. Luca raised the shotgun with one hand and fired. The blast threw the agent backward into the wreckage.
Another agent lunged from the fog, firing wildly. Luca swerved, closed the distance in two thunderous strides, and swung the sledgehammer with bone-crushing force. The steel head struck the agent's ballistic shield, shattering the polycarbonate material and sending the man crashing into the pavement, unconscious.
Luca’s men swarmed the remaining federal guards, disarming them with brutal, surgical precision. Within three minutes, the entire escort team had been neutralized.
Luca approached the armored surveillance van where Isabella was held.
The rear doors were locked from the inside with electronic deadbolts.
Luca didn't bother looking for a key. He raised the sledgehammer above his shoulder, his muscles corded like steel cables under his torn shirt, and brought it down against the door hinges with ferocious, superhuman power.
*CLANG!*
The heavy metal groveled.
*CLANG!*
The bolts snapped like toothpicks.
Luca ripped the reinforced door off its tracks with his bare hands and threw it onto the street.
Inside, the dim emergency light flickered red. Marcus Sterling was gone—he had scrambled through the front cabin escape hatch moments before, leaving behind his dropped glasses and an empty passenger seat.
And there, huddled in the corner of the iron bench, was Isabella.
“Dad!” she screamed, her voice hoarse from crying.
Luca dropped his weapons onto the street. In an instant, he was inside the van, pulling his knife and slicing through the heavy zip-ties around her wrists with surgical care.
The moment her hands were free, Isabella threw her arms around her father’s neck, weeping against his chest. Luca held her tightly, one hand buried in her hair, the other resting protectively over her trembling belly, feeling the rapid, frantic kicks of his grandchild.
“I’m here, Bella. I’ve got you,” Luca whispered, kissing the top of her head. “You’re safe. Your baby is safe.”
“Sterling… he went to Navy Pier,” Isabella sobbed, clutching his bloody shirt. “He has a helicopter waiting at the end of the pier! He has Vanessa with him! Dad, they’re going to escape!”
Luca gently released her, handing her over to Maria, who had just arrived in the armored Mercedes with two field medics.
“Check her vitals. If my grandchild has so much as an irregular heartbeat, I will burn this city to the waterline,” Luca instructed the doctor.
Then, Luca turned toward the dark expanse of Lake Michigan, where the massive silhouette of Navy Pier stretched out into the black water.
“Marco,” Luca said, his eyes burning with an ancient, unforgiving flame.
“Boss?”

“Bring the gasoline.”
