Chapter 2 - The Mother's Phantom

“Stop her!” Marco roared.
Before Vanessa could slip her hand inside the clutch, Marco was already on her. He gripped her slender wrist with iron force, twisting it sharply until she shrieked in agony. The sequined purse dropped to the floor, spilling its contents: a lipstick, a compact mirror, a small vial of clear, unlabelled liquid, and a sleek, silenced Walther PPK.
The guests gasped, several women shrieking as men pulled them back. The sight of a loaded firearm on the bride-to-be inside Luca Moretti’s fortified inner sanctum was tantamount to treason.
Luca didn’t even look up at the commotion. His entire world was narrowed down to the parchment in his hands. His eyes drank in Elena’s words, each stroke of the pen driving a dagger directly into his soul.
*My Dearest Luca,*
*If Isabella is giving you this, then my worst fear has come to pass. I am gone, and you are alone in a world made of wolves. For months, I have noticed the tiny irregularities in my tea, the metallic taste that lingers on my tongue, the dizzy spells that the doctors call stress. It isn't stress, Luca. I am being poisoned from within our own home.*
*The Vance family didn't lose their fortune in the docks fire. They manufactured the debt to enter your inner circle. Vanessa is not an innocent socialite. She was groomed by Julian Falcone. She is their Trojan horse. She feeds me the digitalis drops in my afternoon herbal tea. She thinks I am blind, but a mother protects her own.*
*They want the iron key, Luca. The key to the subterranean bunker beneath our Lake Geneva sanctuary. Inside, I have placed the video logs, the financial audit of every betrayal Falcone engineered, and the ledger that will bring down every corrupt judge in Cook County.*
*Protect our daughter. Vanessa will try to separate you from her. She will poison your mind against Isabella. Don’t let the darkness take you, my love. Forgive me for not telling you to your face—if Falcone knew I had the ledger, he would have killed Bella to silence me.*
*I love you beyond the grave.*
*Elena.*
A tear fell from Luca’s eye, smearing the ink over his dead wife's signature.
Four years. Four years of living in a waking nightmare, four years of letting the woman who poured the poison into Elena’s cup lie beside him, whisper in his ear, and sleep in Elena’s bed.
The grief that had paralyzed Luca Moretti for forty-eight months dissolved into an inferno of volcanic rage.
Slowly, deliberately, Luca folded the letter and slid it into the inner breast pocket of his tuxedo, right over his beating heart. When he raised his head, the humanity was completely gone from his face. What remained was the Devil of Chicago.
“Julian Falcone,” Luca whispered.
Vanessa was on her knees, pinned by Marco. The arrogant mask had shattered, leaving a frantic, sobbing woman. “Luca, please! It’s not true! She was paranoid, she was sick, she lost her mind!”
“You used digitalis,” Luca said, walking toward her with measured, heavy steps. “You put it in her chamomile tea. Every afternoon at four o'clock. You sat with her, smiled at her, and watched her heart slowly shut down.”
“No! No, I loved her! I loved you!” Vanessa wailed, struggling against Marco’s grip.
“You separated my daughter from me,” Luca continued, his voice dropping into a guttural growl. “You blocked her calls. You forged emails in her name telling me she hated me, that she wished I was dead. You made me believe my own flesh and blood had abandoned me in my darkest hour.”
Luca stood directly above her. He reached out and snatched the diamond necklace from Vanessa’s throat, snapping the platinum chain with a single jerk. Diamonds scattered across the marble floor like frozen raindrops.
“Where is the rest of Falcone’s men?” Luca demanded.
Vanessa’s lips trembled. Then, a chilling, bitter laugh broke through her tears. She looked up, her mascara running in ugly black streaks down her face.
“You think you’re so smart, Luca?” she sneered, dropping the façade entirely. “You think you rule this city? Look around you! You’re too late! The key isn’t at the lake house anymore. Julian Falcone went there two hours ago. By midnight, your entire empire belongs to him. And your pathetic little girl?” She glared viciously at Isabella. “She should have stayed in the gutter where I threw her!”
At that moment, the lights in the grand ballroom flickered violently.
Once. Twice.

Then, total, suffocating darkness engulfed the mansion.
