Chapter 4 - The Safehouse in the Shadows

The sub-basement of the Moretti mansion was a fortified bunker built during the height of the Cold War by Luca’s father, reinforced with three feet of poured titanium and independent air filtration systems. Inside, the roar of gunfire from the ballroom had been reduced to a faint, distant vibration.
Isabella sat on an old velvet cot, her body trembling violently. The adrenaline that had kept her moving from her rat-infested apartment on the south side of Chicago to the gilded gates of her father’s mansion was finally wearing off, leaving behind crushing exhaustion and phantom cramps in her abdomen.
“Breathe, child. Drink this,” Maria said gently, pressing a cup of warm water into her hands.
“Maria… what if he hates me?” Isabella whispered, her voice cracking. “What if he thinks I came back just because I’m ruined? Look at me. I have nothing. The baby's father… he left the second the pregnancy test turned positive. I've been sleeping on a friend’s couch for three months. I washed dishes at a diner until my feet swelled so badly I couldn't stand.”
Maria sat beside her, wrapping a warm woolen blanket around the young woman’s shoulders. “Your father spent four years wandering this mansion like a corpse, Isabella. When Vanessa Vance poisoned his ears, telling him you ran away because you hated his life, a part of him died. Tonight… tonight I saw the real Luca Moretti for the first time since your mother’s funeral.”
A heavy, hydraulic hiss echoed through the bunker.
The heavy steel vault door unlatched, swinging open slowly. Isabella flinched, instinctively pulling the blanket tighter around her belly.
Luca stepped into the room.
His tuxedo jacket was gone. His white dress shirt was stained with soot and splattered with dark crimson at the cuffs. His knuckles were bruised, and the scent of cordite clung to him like cheap cologne. But the moment his eyes landed on Isabella, the terrifying mob boss dissolved.
He dropped his weapon onto a side table and slowly walked toward her.
“Isabella,” he breathed.
He stopped two paces away, suddenly looking hesitant, as if afraid that touching her would cause her to disappear. “May I?”
Tears welled up in Isabella’s eyes again. She nodded.
Luca sat beside her on the narrow cot. Slowly, reverently, he pulled his daughter into his chest. Isabella broke down, sobbing uncontrollably against his shoulder, burying her face into his stained shirt. Luca wrapped his arms around her, holding her with a fierce, trembling desperation.
“I’m sorry, Bella,” Luca choked out, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. “I am so sorry. I failed you. I failed Elena. I let a viper sleep in my bed while my little girl was starving in the cold.”
“I thought you didn't love me anymore,” Isabella wept. “She showed me texts from your phone, Dad. Texts saying I was a disgrace, that I wasn't worthy of the Moretti name.”
Luca pulled back, his eyes dark with murderous conviction. “Every word was a lie. Vanessa had cloned my secondary phone. She controlled the gateway between us. But it ends tonight. You will never spend another night in fear. You will never worry about a meal, a roof, or safety. The child you are carrying is a Moretti. And no one harms a Moretti.”
Luca stood up and reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box he had carried for four years. Inside was a delicate, gold necklace shaped like an infinity knot—Elena’s favorite piece of jewelry.
He gently fastened it around Isabella’s neck.
“Your mother knew this war was coming,” Luca said softly. “The letter mentioned the key. Isabella… do you have it?”
Isabella touched the small pendant at the base of the necklace. “Mama told me to never take off this necklace when she gave it to me on my sixteenth birthday. She said, ‘Bella, if you ever lose everything, look inside the knot.’”
Luca’s breath hitched. He leaned closer.
He took the gold infinity knot between his fingers. With a sharp, practiced twist of his thumb, the miniature gold casing cracked open, revealing a micro-laser cut iron key, no larger than a sewing needle, embedded inside the gold shell.
“The Lake Geneva key,” Luca whispered. “Falcone thought it was in the safehouse. He’s tearing the estate apart right now looking for something that was around your neck the entire time.”
Luca looked at Maria. “Take Isabella to the private airstrip. Enzo has the Gulfstream fueled. Fly her to our compound in Sicily. She will be surrounded by fifty armed men who answer only to my blood.”
“No, Dad!” Isabella grabbed his hand. “Don't go to Lake Geneva alone. It’s an ambush! Falcone brought an army!”
Luca smiled, a cold, predatory baring of teeth.

“He brought an army, Bella. But he forgot who built the battlefield.”
