Chapter 10 - The Dynasty Reborn

Three months later.
The spring sun broke through the clouds over the Moretti estate, bathing the freshly bloomed lavender gardens in golden warmth. The scars of the battle had been completely erased; the marble floors of the grand mansion were polished to a mirror shine, and the shattered stained-glass windows had been replaced with vibrant portraits of saints and angels.
In the sun-drenched master bedroom overlooking the lake, Isabella lay propped against a mountain of plush pillows, her face glowing with exhaustion and an overwhelming, radiant peace.
Wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket resting against her chest was a newborn baby girl.
The infant had a soft tuft of dark brown hair and tiny, delicate fingers that gripped Isabella’s thumb.
The heavy oak bedroom door opened with a gentle click.
Luca stepped inside.
He was dressed not in his imposing mafia suits, but in a simple, soft charcoal sweater and linen trousers. The terrifying mob boss who had executed an empire’s worth of enemies over the winter looked transformed. The harsh, sharp lines around his eyes had softened. For the first time in four long years, the darkness in his soul had been replaced by light.
“Is she sleeping?” Luca whispered, walking on his tiptoes as if the heavy marble floor might creak.
Isabella looked up and beamed. “She just woke up, Dad. She was waiting for her grandfather.”
Luca sat gently on the edge of the bed. His large, scarred hands—hands that had ended lives and brought down criminal dynasties—trembled as he reached down.
Isabella carefully transferred the tiny bundle into his arms.
Luca held the baby against his chest. As he looked down into the infant’s face, the little girl slowly blinked open her eyes.
Emerald green.
The exact, unforgettable emerald green of Elena Moretti.
A silent tear slipped from Luca’s eye, trailing down his weathered cheek and falling onto the edge of the cashmere blanket.
“Elena,” Luca breathed, his voice choked with emotion.
“Her name is Elena Isabella Moretti,” Isabella said softly, placing her hand over Luca’s. “So that Mama will always be with us. To remind us that love always outlives the darkness.”
Luca gently kissed the baby's forehead, breathing in the sweet, clean scent of new life. The weight of twenty years of violence, blood, and paranoia seemed to roll off his shoulders all at once.
“Marco has transferred the shipping companies to a blind trust under your name, Bella,” Luca said quietly, never taking his eyes off the baby. “The weapons, the gambling, the docks… I’ve dismantled them. Julian Falcone’s empire is dust. Marcus Sterling’s network was purged by the federal grand jury using the evidence on Elena’s hard drive. The Moretti name is clean.”
Isabella looked at him, surprised. “You gave it all up? The throne? Chicago?”
Luca looked up, his emerald eyes meeting his daughter’s, a soft, beautiful smile touching his lips.
“A throne is just a gilded chair in an empty room, sweetheart,” Luca said, rocking his granddaughter gently in his arms. “This… this family is the only empire that matters.”
From the open French doors leading to the balcony, the warm spring breeze swept into the room, carrying the unmistakable, faint fragrance of lavender.
Luca closed his eyes, smiling into the warm sunlight.

Elena was finally at peace.
And for the first time in his life, the King of Chicago was finally home.
