Chapter 3 - The Scent of Betrayal

A muffled *pop* echoed through the penthouse, followed instantly by a guttural, soul-rending scream from Marcus as his right patella disintegrated under the bullet’s kinetic energy. Dante dropped him like a sack of wet flour. Marcus curled onto the floor, clutching his shattered leg, writhing in agony on the blood-soaked rug.
Vanessa let out a piercing shriek and scrambled backward, her hands scraping against the floor until her back hit the marble fireplace mantel. Her glamorous veneer was entirely stripped away, leaving only raw, naked terror.
"Dante! Please! Have mercy! I love you! Everything I did was for you!" she sobbed, tears cutting black tracks through her mascara.
Dante stepped over Marcus’s twitching body, his Italian leather shoes clicking steadily on the stone floor. He crouched down in front of Vanessa, his gaze cold, calculating, and utterly devoid of pity. He didn't raise his hand against her. He didn't have to. The mere weight of his presence made her choke on her own breath.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, amber glass vial labeled with medical markings—the identical compound Kenneth Reynolds had extracted from Isabella’s bedside chamomile tea canisters during an emergency forensic sweep of her suite.
He held the vial between two fingers, right before Vanessa’s widening eyes.
"Thallium," Dante whispered. "A coward’s weapon. Slow. Painful. It causes nausea, hair loss, joint failure, and ultimately, total placental necrosis. You didn't just want her humiliated, Vanessa. You wanted my children to rot inside her before they could ever take their first breath."
Vanessa's breath hitched. Her gaze flicked frantically from the vial to Dante's eyes. "No... no, you can't prove—"
"Rosa already showed my men the hidden compartment behind your vanity mirror," Dante interrupted, his voice dropping into a register so dark it made her soul shiver. "The exact batch. Imported through the Port of Newark three weeks ago. Signed for by your personal courier."
Vanessa began to shake uncontrollably. "Dante, listen to me! She was nothing! She was weak! She couldn't give you the empire you deserved! She was an embarrassment to the Moretti syndicate! Look at what I built for you! Look at the alliances I brought you!"
"You brought me nothing but venom," Dante said softly. He reached out and caught Vanessa’s wrist—the same wrist she had used to twist Isabella’s arm. He applied just a fraction of his terrifying strength.
Vanessa cried out in agony as her wrist bones ground together. "Aaaah! Stop! Please! It hurts!"
"Does it?" Dante asked, tilting his head with chilling curiosity. "Isabella felt this. Except she was carrying two lives inside her. She was pleading for mercy, not for herself, but for my bloodline. And you mocked her. You laughed while she bled."
He tightened his grip until a distinct *crack* sounded in the silence. Vanessa screamed, her head thrashing against the marble.
Dante released her, letting her limp arm fall to her lap. He stood up and took a pristine silk handkerchief from his breast pocket, slowly wiping his fingers as if he had touched something rancid.
"Marcus," Dante said without looking back at the wounded mercenary on the floor. "You have thirty seconds to tell me who authorized the shipment from Newark. If you speak the truth, I will allow a surgeon to amputate your leg before you bleed out. If you lie, I will feed you your own fingers one by one."
Marcus coughed up a clot of dark blood, his fingers clawing at the floorboards. "It wasn't... it wasn't Vanessa's idea, Boss... she was just... the inside trigger..."
Dante turned slowly. "Who?"
"Salvatore... Salvatore DeLuca," Marcus wheezed, his voice trembling in mortal terror. "He paid her... two million into an offshore Cayman account... He said if Isabella died of 'natural pregnancy complications,' the Moretti family line would be broken... and your syndicate council would force you to step down."
A terrifying smile slowly carved its way across Dante Moretti's face.
Salvatore DeLuca. The head of the rival Outfit family. The man who sat at Dante’s right hand during the Commission meetings and smiled while sipping his wine.

"Pack them both into the cellar of the meatpacking plant," Dante instructed his lieutenants, not breaking his gaze from the rainy window. "Keep them alive. Hook Marcus up to a saline drip. I want them awake when I bring Salvatore down to join them."
