Chapter 19 - The Forged Codicil

Sirens were already howling in the distance when Ryan’s car tore through the shattered iron gates of the Greenwich estate.

The front doors hung wide open, rain blowing across the grand marble foyer. Glass from the French doors in the library was strewn across the terrace like crushed ice.

Ryan stepped into the dark house, his heart pounding in his ears like a bass drum. He grabbed a heavy bronze fire poker from the hearth. "Margaret?" he called out, panic rising in his chest. "Mom!"

A floorboard creaked above him on the second-floor gallery.

Ryan took the sweeping staircase three steps at a time, keeping his back to the wall. The door to his father’s locked study was splintered down the middle.

Inside, the room was ransacked. Bookcases had been tipped over, leather bindings ripped apart, and the mahogany desk had been violently pried open with a crowbar.

Standing in the center of the devastation, illuminated only by the intermittent sweep of police headlights through the blinds, was Vanessa.

She wore dark utility clothes, mud caked on her boots, her face pale and feral. In her gloved hands, she held a thick, yellowed parchment bound by blue silk ribbon—the original holographic will of Arthur Vance.

"You're too late, brother," she spat, her voice dripping with madness.

Ryan lowered the weapon slowly, stepping into the room. "I'm not your brother, Vanessa. Walter told me everything."

Vanessa froze. Her eyes twitched, a manic laugh escaping her lips. "Walter is a pathetic drunk who sold his pride for Arthur's scraps! Arthur was my father! His blood is in my veins! This house, this land, Vance Capital—half of it belongs to me! And this document proves it!"

She waved the parchment in the air.

"My mother left me the codicil Arthur signed in Zurich," she screamed. "He left me forty percent of the private equity holdings! All I needed was to find the registered duplicate in this safe! Now I have it! You and Margaret can't erase me anymore!"

"Look at the paper, Vanessa," Ryan said softly, taking a step toward her. His voice was no longer angry; it was filled with a chilling, devastating pity.

Vanessa glanced down at the bottom of the page, where Arthur’s signature was affixed beside a red wax seal.

"The date on that codicil," Ryan continued, "is October 14, 2022. Look at the watermarks in the paper."

Vanessa’s hands began to tremble. She held the parchment up against the moonlight filtering through the window.

"My father died on October 12, 2022," Ryan said, his voice dropping into the quiet of the ruined room. "He had been dead for two days when that ink touched the page. You didn't find that codicil in my father's safe, Vanessa. You brought it here tonight to plant it."
