Chapter 18 - Shadows in the Estate

The diner booth seemed to drop into an abyss.
Ryan stared at Walter Laurent, the roar of the highway outside fading into a white, deafening buzz.
"Say that again," Ryan whispered.
"Your father had an affair with my wife, Elena, back in 1996," Walter confessed, his voice trembling. "Arthur didn't know she was pregnant when he walked away to marry Margaret. When Vanessa was twelve, Elena got sick. Cancer. She needed money for treatment. She tracked Arthur down. He paid for the hospital, but he took a DNA test. It was positive. Vanessa was his illegitimate child."
Ryan’s head spun violently. *Vanessa was Arthur's daughter?*
"That's impossible," Ryan choked out. "We... we were engaged! We almost married! My father would never let—"
"Arthur didn't know she was targeting you!" Walter shouted, leaning across the table, his eyes wild with grief. "Vanessa found the letters after her mother died. She hated Arthur for abandoning her while you grew up in penthouses, sailing yachts, going to Harvard. She didn't want to marry you because she loved you, Ryan! She wanted to tear your mother's kingdom to pieces from the inside out! She knew if she married you, the Vance bloodline would be forced to acknowledge her claim to the estate!"
Ryan stood up, stumbling back from the table. He couldn't breathe. The room was spinning. His fiancée... was his half-sister?
"No," Walter said quickly, seeing the absolute horror on Ryan’s face. "No, Ryan, listen to me! You don't understand the whole story! Elena lied to Arthur! Vanessa isn't his!"
Ryan stopped, his hand gripping the edge of the booth until his knuckles turned bone-white. "What did you just say?"
"Elena falsified the lab report in 1996 to get Arthur's money," Walter whispered, pulling another paper from the envelope. "Arthur found out the truth two weeks before he died. He ordered a second test from an independent geneticist. Vanessa wasn't his daughter. She was mine. But Arthur died before he could tell her. Vanessa still believes she is a Vance. She believes she was taking back her birthright!"
Before Ryan could process the revelation, his phone shrieked in his pocket. It was the security monitoring service from his mother’s estate.
"Mr. Vance, this is Central Dispatch. Multiple perimeter breach alarms triggered at the main residence in Greenwich. Glass break detected in the private library. We have dispatched local units, but we show two unidentified individuals moving through the primary suite."

Ryan didn't hang up. He sprinted through the diner door into the pouring rain, slamming his foot on the accelerator of his car, burning rubber into the dark turnpike.
