Chapter 15 - Vanessa’s Counter-Strike

At 8:00 PM that evening, Ryan’s phone began vibrating uncontrollably on the table. Alerts from Twitter, Instagram, and Bloomberg flashed across the screen in rapid succession.

"Turn on Channel 4," Pierce said suddenly, glancing at his tablet.

Ryan grabbed the remote and hit the power button.

There, sitting beneath the studio lights of a prime-time national entertainment broadcast, was Vanessa. She wore an understated black dress with a modest neckline. Her hair was styled softly, her face devoid of heavy makeup, highlighting her pale, tear-stained cheeks.

Beside her sat Bradley Cooper-Cole, the most ruthless, media-savvy celebrity divorce litigator in Manhattan.

"I went into that wedding with an open heart," Vanessa was saying, her voice trembling with synthetic vulnerability. "I loved Ryan with everything I had. But the Vance family is an empire built on terror and emotional control. Margaret Vance could not accept that her son had found a woman who would not bow to her."

The screen cut to a blurry, shaky video shot from an iPhone at the wedding reception.

The video had been meticulously edited. It showed Margaret leaning in close to Vanessa, her expression harsh and unyielding. The audio was muffled, but Margaret’s voice was audible: *"You will leave this family with nothing, do you hear me? You are nothing."*

Then, the clip showed Margaret grabbing Vanessa’s wrist. The video cut right as Vanessa’s arm swung back in what appeared to be a desperate act of self-defense. The actual slap—the brutal, premeditated strike that had shocked the room—was framed as the reaction of a cornered, terrified young woman being physically restrained by a tyrannical matriarch.

"I was terrified," Vanessa wept, dabbing at her eyes with a tissue. "She grabbed me. She threatened to destroy my life if I married her son. I reacted out of pure survival instinct. And the very next morning, while I was still traumatized, they sent armed men to throw me onto the street in my robe."

Her lawyer leaned into the microphone. "We have filed a fifty-million-dollar federal civil rights and battery lawsuit against Margaret Vance and the Vance Family Trust. Furthermore, we are petitioning the court for emergency spousal support and an immediate freeze on all Vance Capital liquid assets pending a full investigation into domestic coercion and fraud."

Ryan stood up so fast his chair crashed against the parquet floor. "She edited the tape! Margaret never grabbed her—Margaret was pulling her hand away because Vanessa tried to snatch the folder out of her clutch!"

"It doesn't matter what the truth is right now," Pierce said coldly, watching the ticker run across the bottom of the television screen. "The court of public opinion has spoken. Vance Capital’s stock will take a hit the second the bell rings tomorrow morning. She’s trying to choke our liquidity until we settle."

"We won't settle," Margaret said, her voice dropping to an icy whisper. "Not for fifty million. Not for fifty cents."
