Chapter 8 - Storming the Fortress

The concussive shockwave of the shaped C-4 charge blew out the entire front half of the elevator lobby, shattering the ceiling tiles and sending three contractors flying across the marble floor like ragdolls. The blast knocked Sterling off his feet, showering the room in concrete dust and acrid smoke.
Before the smoke could clear, the penthouse’s massive glass skylight sixty feet above shattered into a million falling diamonds.
*CRASH!*
Descending on dual high-speed rappelling ropes, two shadows plunged from the gray sky directly into the heart of the chaos.
Marcus Vance hit the marble floor in a combat roll, coming up with a modified Benelli M4 tactical shotgun in hand.
*BOOM!*
The heavy 12-gauge slug punched through the chest plate of the contractor nearest Evelyn’s wheelchair, lifting him completely off his feet and throwing him into the glass dining table.
Beside Marcus dropped Master Sergeant Jackson—Marcus’s longtime Ranger brother-in-arms, armed with a suppressed combat rifle. Jackson moved with surgical, devastating precision, dropping two more contractors who were scrambling to recover their weapons from the floor.
"SECURE THE ASSET!" Marcus bellowed over the ringing thunder of gunfire.
Jackson immediately sprinted toward Evelyn, tossing a ballistic shield over her wheelchair and pulling her back into the reinforced alcove of the service hallway. "I got her, Colonel! She's breathing! Move, move!"
"Donald!" Marcus roared, his voice cutting through the smoke like a war horn.
General Donald Sterling was on his feet, scrambling frantically toward the master bedroom where an emergency helipad access door stood open to the roof. He had drawn a pearl-handled .45 caliber 1911 pistol—his ceremonial sidearm.
The two remaining contractors laid down desperate suppressive fire to cover their employer's retreat.
Marcus didn't flinch. Dropping the empty shotgun, he drew his twin sidearms, advancing through the haze of smoke and fire like an unstoppable elemental force. Every step was deliberate; every round fired found its mark. The contractors collapsed, neutralized before they could reload.
Marcus reached the master bedroom doors just as Sterling slammed and locked the heavy titanium security bolt.
"OPEN THE DOOR, DONALD!" Marcus yelled, slamming his shoulder into the reinforced steel.
From the other side, Sterling’s voice echoed, frantic and breathless. "It's over, Marcus! The bird is touching down on the roof! The Justice Department will never see those files! I have diplomatic clearance out of Andrews Air Force Base!"
Above them, the rhythmic, deafening thrum of heavy helicopter blades shook the penthouse structure. A Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk—bearing private military contractor insignia—was hovering just twenty feet above the penthouse roof pad.
Marcus didn't waste time trying to breach the titanium door.
He spun around, spotted the fire escape access ladder running up the outside terrace wall, and bolted out onto the rain-slicked balcony.
The wind off the Potomac was screaming at forty knots, whipping Marcus's combat jacket around him as he climbed the exterior iron rungs into the roaring hurricane of rotor wash.
He crested the roof just as General Donald Sterling emerged from the stairwell bulkhead.
Sterling was clutching a heavy leather satchel containing his personal hard drives and diplomatic passports. He was sprinting toward the helicopter's open cargo door, where a contractor crew chief was reaching out to pull him aboard.
"STERLING!"
Marcus’s roar pierced even the scream of the twin turbine engines.
Sterling turned, raising his ceremonial .45 pistol.
*BANG!*
The round grazed Marcus’s left shoulder, tearing through the tactical fabric and drawing a bright crimson line of blood.
Marcus didn't even break his stride.
Closing the twenty-foot distance in two seconds, Marcus tackled the four-star General to the wet non-skid surface of the helipad, sending the pistol clattering away into the rain.

The two men rolled across the roof, locked in a brutal, life-and-death struggle just five feet from the spinning tail rotor blades.
