Chapter 7 - The Hostage in the Penthouse

The storm that had battered the capital finally broke, leaving the morning sky a bruised purple and orange. But atop the thirty-story *Sterling Tower* overlooking the Potomac in Rosslyn, Virginia, an elite private army had transformed the luxury penthouse into a fortified fortress.

General Donald Sterling stood before the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, wearing his immaculate four-star Army dress uniform. His chest was covered in medals—Silver Stars, Legions of Merit, combat ribbons earned across four decades of military expansion.

Beside him stood eight private military contractors clad in unmarked black ceramic body armor, gripping suppressed Sig MCX assault rifles.

On the leather sofa behind them sat Evelyn Vance.

She had been taken.

Two hours ago, while Marcus was infiltrating Fort Meade, a rogue tactical squad disguised as a Secret Service medical evacuation detail had stormed Room 404, neutralizing the Delta operators with experimental flash-toxin gas and extracting Evelyn in a heavily armored ambulance.

Now, she was strapped into a wheelchair, an oxygen tank beside her, looking frail but stubbornly unbroken.

"You look well, Evelyn," Sterling said without turning around, admiring his reflection in the glass. "Considering the circumstances. Your son has caused me a tremendous amount of inconvenience this morning. He neutralized my extraction team. He forced Vanessa to give a full deposition to the Inspector General. He even managed to put Mercer into an induced coma."

Sterling turned around, an amused, arrogant smile touching his lips. "He’s a magnificent soldier. The best I ever trained. It's truly a tragedy that I have to kill him."

Evelyn raised her head, her gray eyes burning with the fierce, indomitable spirit of a woman who had buried a war-hero husband and raised a warrior son.

"Marcus will not stop until your head is on a pike, Donald," Evelyn rasped, her voice trembling but fearless. "You were a coward forty years ago when my husband carried you out of the Mekong Delta, and you are a coward today hiding behind children in black armor."

Sterling’s smile vanished. His jaw clenched tightly. He walked over to Evelyn, stopping just inches from her wheelchair.

"Your husband was a sentimental fool who died with sixty dollars in his checking account," Sterling hissed. "I built an empire. And that guidance algorithm your family has been hoarding like a religious relic will fund my legacy for generations. Marcus will bring it to me here. Because if he doesn't... he will watch you take your final flight off this balcony."

The private elevator chime rang with a crisp, polite *DING*.

The contractors instantly raised their weapons, spreading into a tactical kill-box formation aimed directly at the stainless-steel elevator doors.

"Remember," Sterling ordered, stepping behind a ballistic glass partition. "The moment the doors open, double-tap to the center mass. Check the briefcase. Do not let him speak."

The digital indicator above the elevator scrolled: *FLOOR 30*.

The doors slid open.

The room erupted into an immediate, deafening cacophony of gunfire.

*TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!*

Dozens of high-caliber rounds shredded the interior of the elevator cab, blowing the mirrored panels into thousands of glittering shards.

"CEASE FIRE!" the squad leader barked, raising a clenched fist.

Smoke poured from the elevator.

Inside lay a single figure slumped on the floor, clad in a combat uniform.

Sterling stepped out from behind the glass, a triumphant grin spreading across his face. "Check the body. Get the case."

The squad leader stepped forward, his rifle aimed at the fallen soldier. He reached down, flipping the body onto its back with the barrel of his weapon.

The contractor froze.

The man in the elevator was not Marcus Vance.

It was Julian Mercer—bound, gagged, wearing Marcus's combat jacket, with an active tactical breaching charge taped directly to his chest!

A small digital timer on the charge was flashing: *00:01*.

"TRAP! GET BA—"
