Chapter 4 - The Poisoned IV

The grandfather clock in the corner of the cigar lounge ticked with the merciless rhythm of an executioner's countdown. Outside, thunder shook the heavy wooden beams of the manor.
Marcus stared into Mercer's mocking eyes. The urge to blow the traitor's brains across the Persian rug was a roaring fire in his chest. But decades of high-stakes special operations had forged Marcus’s discipline into diamond. In combat, you never take the enemy's bait when the hostage is still in the line of fire.
Marcus lowered the Sig Sauer two inches, keeping it leveled at Mercer’s solar plexus.
"What do you want, Julian?" Marcus demanded, his voice flat, emotionless, calculating every micro-second.
"Sensible boy," Mercer sneered, tapping his fingers against the mahogany table. "Here is the transaction. You will hand over the flash drive in your jacket containing the encrypted master-key algorithm for the Vance Guidance System. You will call your CID friends at Fort Meade and order Vanessa's immediate release into my custody. And then, you will resign your commission, sign a full confession acknowledging that *you* embezzled thirty million dollars from black-ops logistics, and disappear to South America."
Mercer leaned forward, his gray eyes burning with psychopathic certainty. "Do that, and your mother lives out her remaining days in a very comfortable, very quiet hospice in Vermont. Refuse... and she dies screaming on that live monitor right now."
Marcus looked at the screen. On the live feed, the fake surgeon was unscrewing the valve of the canister.
Marcus didn't blink. He reached into his tactical vest with his left hand, slowly pulling out a heavy, steel-cased military flash drive. "You want the key? Here it is."
Mercer reached out, a greedy smirk pulling at his scarred lips. "Wise choice, Marcus. You always were a pragmatist when—"
Marcus didn't hand him the drive.
Instead, with blinding speed, Marcus whipped the heavy steel drive forward like a brass knuckle, striking Mercer square across the bridge of his nose.
*CRACK!*
Mercer let out a muffled howl as his nose shattered, blood spraying across his pristine white shirt. He stumbled backward into the leather chair, clutching his face.
In that same split second, Marcus tapped the earpiece hidden in his ear canal, switching to an emergency encrypted radio channel.
"RAVEN ACTUAL TO STRIKE TEAM! BREACH ROOM 404! AUTHORIZE LETHAL FORCE! DROP HIM NOW!"
Marcus hadn't gone to the Belvedere Club alone. He was a Ranger Colonel; he never left his flanks exposed.
On the laptop screen, before Mercer could recover, the door of Room 404 was blasted off its hinges. Two Delta Force operators in full combat kit swarmed the room with silenced carbines.
*PHT! PHT!*
Two suppressed rounds punched through the fake surgeon's chest. The assassin collapsed instantly onto the floor, dropping the cyanide canister onto the rubber mat where it bounced harmlessly, unopened. The operators immediately formed a human shield over Evelyn’s bed, one of them turning to the ceiling camera and giving a crisp thumbs-up.
Mercer looked up from the chair, blood pouring between his fingers, his eyes wild with sudden, frantic terror. "You... you bastard!"
"You forgot Rule One of counter-insurgency, Julian," Marcus said coldly, stepping forward and driving the heavy steel sole of his combat boot into Mercer’s chest, pinning him to the floor. "Never negotiate with a terrorist when you already have his kill team zeroed."
Mercer spat a mouthful of blood onto the floorboards, coughing violently. "You think... you think this ends with me? I'm just the broker, Marcus! Aegis Vanguard isn't my company! I work for someone bigger... someone in your own command chain!"
Marcus knelt down, driving his knee into Mercer’s sternum. "Give me the name."
"Go to hell," Mercer wheezed.
Marcus pulled a combat tourniquet from his pocket, wrapping it around Mercer’s broken arm and wrenching the windlass tight until Mercer let out an agonized, high-pitched scream.
"I've broken warlords in Kandahar, Julian," Marcus whispered into his ear. "I will tear you apart tendon by tendon before the sun comes up. WHO HIRED YOU?"
Mercer’s eyes bulged with agonizing pain. "GENERAL STERLING!" he choked out, gasping for air. "General Donald Sterling! Vice Chief of Staff! He authorized the covert funding! He’s the one who wanted the drone telemetry for the private defense consortium! Vanessa... Vanessa was his mistress before she ever met you! She was planted in your life from day one!"
The revelation struck Marcus harder than any bullet ever could.
General Donald Sterling was Marcus’s mentor. The man who had pinned his Colonel's eagle on his collar. The man who had signed his deployment orders. The man who had sat at Evelyn’s Thanksgiving table three years ago, drinking wine and praising Marcus's service.
Vanessa hadn't fallen for Mercer. She was a professional operative, a honeypot orchestrated by the second-highest-ranking officer in the United States Army to dismantle the Vance family legacy from within.
Before Marcus could process the horror of the revelation, the mansion's exterior security alarms began to wail.
*WHOOOP! WHOOOP! WHOOOP!*
Red emergency lights flashed through the rain-slicked windows. Heavy tactical boots were pounding up the stairs outside the cigar lounge.

Mercer, lying broken on the floor, began to laugh hysterically through his blood-soaked teeth. "Sterling knows you're here, Marcus! Those aren't club bouncers coming up the stairs! That's Sterling’s private black-budget hit team! You're in an off-the-books slaughterhouse... and you're never walking out alive!"
