Chapter 2 - The Web of Deception

The flatline alarm tore through the silence of the fourth floor like an air-raid siren. Marcus’s military instincts instantly superseded his rage. He shoved Vanessa away, sending her sprawling across the floor, and lunged over his mother’s bed.
Evelyn’s head was thrown back against the pillows, her eyes rolling into the back of her head, white foam gathering at the corners of her lips. Her chest seized in violent, spasmodic tremors.
"MOM!" Marcus bellowed. He hit the emergency code button on the headboard with enough force to crack the plastic casing. "CODE BLUE! ROOM 404! NOW!"
The hallway erupted into chaos. Heavy footsteps pounded against the linoleum. Within four seconds, two trauma nurses and an on-call physician burst through the double doors, their emergency kit rattling.
"Step back, Colonel!" the doctor ordered, pulling a stethoscope from his neck. "She's going into anaphylactic shock or acute organ failure! Nurse, get the crash cart! Push one milligram of epinephrine IV stat!"
"Wait!" Marcus yelled, his trained eyes catching sight of the IV bag hanging on the stainless steel pole. The standard saline bag had a tiny, yellowish tint at the bottom of the chamber, and a puncture mark in the rubber port that had not been sealed with standard medical tape. "Check the IV line! Someone injected an unmonitored compound directly into her drip!"
The doctor’s eyes widened. He tore the line from Evelyn’s arm, tossing the contaminated tubing into an evidence bin. "Flush the line! Bag valve mask, let's go! One, two, three—push!"
In the corner of the room, Vanessa was already on her feet, quietly slinking toward the exit, her designer purse clutched tightly under her arm.
Marcus turned his head like a radar tracking a missile. "Don't you dare move," he growled.
Vanessa ignored him, bolting through the doorway into the corridor.
Marcus didn't hesitate. Leaving the medical team to stabilize his mother, he charged out of Room 404. He saw Vanessa sprinting toward the executive elevators at the end of the long hall. Her high heels clattered furiously against the polished floors.
"SECURITY! LOCK DOWN THE NORTH CORRIDOR!" Marcus’s booming command echoed down the ward, freezing orderlies and visitors in their tracks.
Two armed Military Police officers stationed at the floor’s reception desk immediately drew their tasers. Vanessa saw the blockade and pivoted wildly toward the emergency stairwell. But Marcus closed the forty-foot gap like a predator, his stride long and devastatingly fast.
Just as Vanessa pushed the heavy fire door open, Marcus grabbed the strap of her purse, yanking backward. The force spun her around, and Marcus pinned her against the concrete wall of the stairwell, his forearm pressing firmly against her collarbone.
"Let me go! Marcus, you're hurting me! You'll be court-martialed for this!" she shrieked, thrashing against his grip.
"Court-martialed?" Marcus sneered, his face inches from hers. "Julian Mercer is a classified traitor designated Priority Alpha by the Department of Defense. You are harboring a terrorist fugitive, committing corporate treason, and attempting to murder a military dependent. You aren't dealing with a court-martial, Vanessa. You're dealing with life at ADX Florence."
Two MPs caught up, their weapons drawn, breath ragged. "Colonel Vance! Sir, what’s the situation?"
"Detain this woman," Marcus ordered, his voice steady as iron. "Place her in double flex-cuffs. Confiscate all personal electronics, keys, and cards. She is to be held under Article 104 of the UCMJ—Aiding the Enemy. If she speaks, if she twitches, if anyone tries to post bail, you notify CID and Special Operations Command immediately. Do you copy?"
"Yes, Sir!" the senior MP barked, immediately forcing Vanessa’s arms behind her back.
As the cold steel cuffs clicked around her wrists, Vanessa stopped screaming. A chilling, venomous calm washed over her features. She looked at Marcus through tangled strands of hair, her lips curling into a smug, arrogant grin.
"You think you’ve won, Marcus?" she whispered, her voice dripping with poison. "You think you’re in control? Julian bought this hospital's parent holding company six months ago. He owns the Chief of Staff. He owns the pharmacy board. He owns the federal prosecutors in this district. You’ve been chasing sand in the Middle East while we systematically stripped your family of every title deed, patent, and dollar you ever inherited."
Marcus took her purse, unzipping the main compartment. Inside lay Evelyn’s original, centuries-old family deed to three thousand acres of mineral-rich land in Shenandoah Valley—land where the Vance family had lived for four generations. Clipped to it was a notarized power of attorney, transferring all Evelyn’s assets to an offshore shell entity named *Aegis Vanguard LLC*.
The signature at the bottom was Evelyn’s—shaky, jagged, and smeared with a faint drop of blood.
"She didn't sign this willingly," Marcus said, his voice deadly quiet.
"Julian held a pen to her throat and told her that if she didn't sign, your transport helicopter leaving Erbil would experience a catastrophic mechanical failure," Vanessa hissed. "She signed it to save *your* miserable life, Marcus. And now, Julian has the land, he has the DOD contracts, and you... you have nothing."
Marcus stepped back, tucking the documents into his combat jacket. "Take her down to the holding cells," he commanded the MPs. "Strip-search her. Full isolation."
As the MPs dragged Vanessa kicking and cursing down the stairs, Marcus walked back into Room 404.
The doctor was sweating through his scrub top, pulling off his latex gloves. The monitor had settled back into a fragile, rhythmic beep. *BEEP... BEEP... BEEP...*
"We saved her, Colonel," the doctor panted, looking pale. "We pumped her stomach and flushed her system with activated charcoal and atropine. It was succinylcholine—a paralytic muscle relaxant. In high doses, it stops the diaphragm. It would have looked like sudden respiratory arrest due to heart failure. She wouldn't have lasted another ten minutes."
Marcus walked to the edge of the bed. Evelyn’s eyes fluttered open. She saw her son standing over her, his eyes blazing with fury, sorrow, and unyielding love.
"Marcus..." she breathed faintly through the oxygen mask. "Julian... he came for the blueprints. In the study... under the floorboards..."
May you like
Marcus leaned down, kissing his mother's pale forehead. "Rest, Mom. I'm taking the watch now. I know what he wants. And I'm going to make him pay for every drop of blood he took from this family."
