Chapter 8 - The Price of Being Alive

The silence between them was vast, deep, and final.

Ryan sat slumped in his chair, looking at his bare hands. Without his title, without his company, without the penthouse and the sports cars, he felt completely hollow. An empty shell of a man who had traded an empire for an illusion.

"Why didn't you tell me?" he whispered into the quiet room. "Why didn't you tell me who your family really was? Why let me play the big shot for all those years?"

Claire stood up slowly, her hand resting protectively against her belly.

"Because I wanted you to love me for who I was, Ryan. Not for my family’s money. Not for my grandfather’s patents. I wanted a real marriage. I wanted a partner who looked at me across a crowded room and felt safe, not competitive."

She walked toward the heavy mahogany door, her movements graceful and calm.

"When you met me, you had nothing, and I loved you completely. When you had everything, you decided that love wasn't exciting enough. You wanted adrenaline. You wanted validation from strangers who didn't care if you lived or died."

She placed her hand on the brass doorknob, pausing to look over her shoulder.

"You said she made you feel alive, Ryan."

Claire offered him a faint, sorrowful smile—a final benediction for a dead marriage.

"Now you have all the time in the world to feel what it’s like to survive."

She pulled open the door and stepped out into the sunlit corridor, where her mother and her family were waiting to take her home.

The door clicked shut.

Ryan sat alone in the dim conference room.

Through the rain-streaked window, he watched as a black Maybach pulled up to the private portico below. The chauffeur opened the door, and Claire stepped inside, disappearing behind the dark, protective glass.

The car glided smoothly down the tree-lined driveway, merging onto the highway toward Oak Ridge, carrying his daughter, his former life, and every shred of greatness he had ever claimed as his own.

Ryan reached into his pocket.

His phone buzzed. It was an automated notification from LinkedIn.

Ryan let out a dry, cracked laugh that sounded like dry leaves scraping across concrete.

He dropped the phone onto the table, laid his head down against the cold wood, and closed his eyes.
