Chapter 5 - Madison's Web Unravels

Back in Miami, the heat was suffocating.
Inside the Grand Venetian penthouse, chaos had replaced luxury. Three different interior design crews were hauling out Claire’s bespoke French provincial dressers, replacing them with stark, unpainted minimalist concrete pedestals that Madison had ordered on express delivery.
Madison stood in the center of the living room, wearing a silk robe, holding a flute of mimosa while giving frantic orders to a weary project manager.
"No, no, no! I told you, the travertine table goes near the window! The light hits it better for my morning TikToks! And where are the floral deliveries from the Design District? I have forty influencers coming at seven tonight!"
The front door slammed open with enough violence to shake the frame.
Ryan walked in, his suit jacket discarded, his white shirt drenched in sweat at the collar, his tie crooked. His eyes were wide, manic, and violently bloodshot.
Madison gasped, putting down her champagne flute. "Babe! What is your problem? You almost broke the door! And why didn't you answer my calls? The catering company needs an eight-thousand-dollar deposit wire immediately, and your black card bounced!"
Ryan stopped. He looked at her.
For the first time since that fateful night across the marble table, the intoxicating haze of infatuation evaporated from Ryan’s mind, leaving behind a cold, horrifying clarity.
He saw the heavy makeup settling into the lines around her eyes. He saw the calculated petulance in her pout. He saw the heaps of brand-new luxury shopping bags littering the floor—bags bought with his money while his company was disintegrating by the second.
"What did you say?" Ryan whispered, his voice trembling with barely suppressed hysteria.
"I said your card was declined!" Madison crossed her arms, tapping her slipper impatiently against the floor. "It’s beyond embarrassing, Ryan. I was at the salon with Chloe and Bianca, and the stylist had to run the card four times! Do you have any idea how that looks? I had to use my own debit card to cover a two-hundred-dollar tip! You need to call the bank and fix it right now."
Ryan walked toward her slowly, his footsteps heavy. He looked down at the island counter where his laptop was open, showing an avalanche of catastrophic headlines:
*TECH CHRONICLE: NexaCorp IPO Halted Amid Patent Ownership Crisis.*
*MIAMI HERALD: Millionaire Ryan Sterling Accused of Corporate Fraud by Vance Trust.*
*BLOOMBERG: SoftBank Considers Cancelling $700M Investment Deal.*
"My card was declined," Ryan said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, "because the board of directors froze my executive compensation accounts at two o'clock this afternoon."
Madison blinked, her expression shifting from annoyance to mild confusion. "Wait... what? What does that mean?"
"It means I don't have access to the cash reserves," Ryan shouted, his composure shattering like glass. "It means every dime I possess is tied up in NexaCorp stock! And right now, that stock is worth as much as toilet paper because my pregnant ex-wife holds the master key to our entire code architecture!"
Madison took a step back, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. "Wait... you told me she was just a stay-at-home nobody! You told me you owned the company completely! You promised me a three-million-dollar villa in the Hamptons for the summer!"
"I told you what I thought was true!" Ryan raged, waving his arms wildly around the apartment. "Claire tricked me! She sat there for five years pretending to be docile, letting me think I built it all, while her family held a loaded gun to my head the whole time!"
Madison didn't offer a hug. She didn't offer words of comfort. She didn't say *'we'll get through this together.'*
Instead, her face hardened into a mask of pure, self-interested calculation.
"If the company goes under... what happens to this penthouse?" she asked, her voice dropping its playful, flirtatious tone entirely.
Ryan stared at her, horrified. "The penthouse? That’s what you’re worried about? My life’s work is about to be erased from the face of the earth, and you’re asking about real estate?"
"Of course I’m asking about real estate!" Madison spat back, her shrill voice echoing off the high ceilings. "I moved in here because you were an empire builder, Ryan! I didn't leave my private equity boyfriend in Manhattan to become the nursemaid to a bankrupt, disgraced fraud with an angry ex-wife and a child on the way!"
Ryan felt as if he had been slapped across the face with a frozen iron bar.
*I didn't leave my private equity boyfriend...*
"What?" Ryan choked out, stumbling back against the kitchen island. "You told me you were single. You told me I was the only man who understood your soul!"
Madison let out a cold, mocking laugh, sweeping her blonde hair over her shoulder. "Oh, please. Grow up, Ryan. You’re forty years old. You really thought a twenty-three-year-old girl fell in love with your sparkling personality? You bought me ten-thousand-dollar handbags and flew me on private jets. That’s what made you 'alive.' But if the jet runs out of fuel, honey... there’s nothing here for me."
She grabbed her designer purse from the counter, pulled out her phone, and tapped out a rapid series of messages.
"Cancel the contractors," Madison told the bewildered workers standing in the hallway. "Party’s canceled. I’m checking into the Faena Hotel."
She walked past Ryan without even glancing at him.
As the elevator doors closed behind her, leaving Ryan completely alone in the half-demolished, echoing wreckage of his multi-million-dollar penthouse, the silence of the room collapsed on him like a tomb.
He looked down at the floor.
Lying in the corner, forgotten under a stack of design swatches, was the crushed piece of paper Claire had left behind.
*Safe harbor has been claimed.*

Ryan fell to his knees on the cold marble, burying his face in his trembling hands, and finally began to weep.
