Chapter 7 - The Final Signature

Ryan turned the page with fingers that felt like lead.

It was a deed of full corporate conveyance.

"As of eight o'clock this morning," Charles Vance announced, his crisp baritone cutting through the weeping executive's despair, "the board of directors of NexaCorp unanimously accepted the resignation of Ryan Sterling as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board. SoftBank has officially restructured their investment agreement. They are not pulling out."

Ryan looked up, a faint, pathetic spark of hope igniting in his eyes. "They aren't?"

"No," Charles smiled thinly. "Because Vance Global Holdings has stepped in as the majority equity holder. Claire Vance has been appointed Interim Chairman of the Board. All patent rights have been permanently transferred into an educational and commercial trust in the name of your unborn daughter, Eleanor Arthur Sterling."

Ryan swallowed hard, his voice barely a rasp. "And... and me? What happens to my shares?"

"Your shares were leveraged as personal collateral for the corporate loans you took out to finance your South Beach lifestyle and Madison’s shopping sprees," Charles stated mercilessly. "The trust has bought out your debt at ten cents on the dollar. In exchange, you will sign this complete waiver of paternal guardianship, relinquishing all executive authority and administrative control over the Vance trust assets."

"No!" Ryan cried, clutching his chest. "You’re taking my baby! You’re writing me out of her life completely!"

"No, Ryan," Claire interrupted, leaning forward, her gaze piercing through him. "I am not a monster. I will never do to you what you did to us."

Ryan froze, staring at her through red, swollen eyes.

"You will have standard, supervised visitation rights once every three months, right here in Raleigh, under the supervision of a court-appointed social worker," Claire stated firmly. "You will not pay child support; my daughter will never need a single cent from your pocket. But you will never hold legal custody. You will never make decisions regarding her education, her medical care, or her future. You gave up that right the moment you put your freedom above her survival."

Ryan looked down at the signature line.

His hands shook so violently that he could barely hold the pen. Every instinct of his former, arrogant self screamed at him to fight, to hire lawyers, to drag this through the tabloids.

But as he looked across the table at Claire—serene, powerful, surrounded by the impenetrable fortress of her family's wealth and dignity—he knew the truth.

There was no fight left to have. He had built his entire identity on a foundation of sand, and the tide had come in.

With tears falling onto the parchment, blurring the black ink, Ryan Sterling scribbled his signature.

He pushed the papers across the table.

Charles Vance promptly collected them, slid them into his leather portfolio, and stood up. "The notary will stamp these outside. Julian, if you would join me to finalize the court filings."

Both attorneys exited the room, leaving the husband and wife alone one last time.
